RIP Bill Atkinson, creator of MacPaint, HyperCard, and lots of fundamental mac graphics stuff

via facebook facebook.com/share/p/1J715Vjcg

screenshot of facebook post from Bill Atkinson's account:

Dear Friends and Family,
We regret to write that our beloved husband, father, and stepfather Bill Atkinson passed away on the night of Thursday, June 5th, 2025, due to pancreatic cancer. He was at home in Portola Valley in his bed, surrounded by family. We will miss him greatly, and he will be missed by many of you, too. He was a remarkable person, and the world will be forever different because he lived in it. He was fascinated by consciousness, and as he has passed on to a different level of consciousness, we wish him a journey as meaningful as the one it has been to have him in our lives. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, stepson, stepdaughter, two brothers, four sisters, and dog, Poppy.

🎊 One Year Ago: 🎊

Even if it’s not anywhere as famous as Silicon Graphics machines, this workstation from the 80s has something that others don’t have; a game exclusive to it, that fully takes advantage of the so impressive graphics that it could display! Check it out at the link below!

Mystery-brand 8088 PC/XT clone I rescued from e-waste. No brand on it anywhere other than those freakin awesome “Heart My PC” badges, and I can’t find a single mention anywhere online about an all-blue PC/XT clone even existing.

It has “NAN TAN COMPUTER CO” and “NTC CO” under the keyboard, but they seem to just be a keyboard manufacturer and never made full PCs.

All the chips inside are super generic, and all are either made in Malaysia or Taiwan, so I’m assuming it’s some generic small-run clone from somewhere in Asia.

Keyboards?
Where we're going we don't need keyboards.

I have now memorized the exact sequence of pins to touch to type "LOADT".

Ha, I got a BlueSCSI v2 working on my powerbook duo 2300c. Turns out they DO have internal scsi, you just have to have the right flex cable. Cant use IDE though, having a drive attached to it disables SCSI. Loading my website via the dynaport emulation. #retrocomputing

I know, many have been asking for this and even more out there didn’t even dare to ask.

But finally, the wait is over:

You can now use your #PinephonePro running #FreeBSD to do all your #Borland C++ #OS2 development while waiting for 1997 to arrive.

Waking up this morning surrounded by trees in the Forest of Dean.

Followed by a walk to Symonds Yat Rock, overlooking the Wye Valley.

A landscape phone of the forest. Several broad trees on the left of the frame with smaller trees to the right. The floor is a mixture of brown leaves and bracken. It looks very much like a quite lush forest. The sky is bright, but grey; not blue.A landscape view from a high vantage point over a valley with a river running from mid bottom to mid top of the photo. The river looks relatively wide and snakes, the water brown. The air is foggy and damp. On the left of the river a hill covered in forest. On the right the steep banks lead to fields of grass, rising to a hill covered in forest.

@mwichary Here's a very unusual early French ergonomic keyboard prototype, the Marsan. The previous owner tried to wire it to use with a SwyftCard

It's going to a museum for an exhibition, as well as a copy of Shift Happens available for visitors to read

My wife wanted some special BD gift for me. She looked in my vintage computer collection, put all the model-names into ChatGPT and asked if it would offer something similar - what is not yet in my collection. AI offered this wonderful NEC PC-98LT with a super rare NEC V50 CPU. She ordered this laptop to a mate in Japan and she sent it to us to Berlin. I was really "positive" shocked. I never thought my wife would ever present me an retro machine... I love my wife!

We've got significant UI improvements alongside many other additions such as an app icon, providing environment variables for lpac via the command line, error handling, eUICC 'notification' handling, viewing of eUICC chip info and appstream metainfo data!

My "life long" wish of porting #SailfishOS atleast once has been successfully accomplished. Welcome SFOS on the OnePlus 7T Pro.

I still remember talking with @cas back in 2020 when they still maintained their SFOS 3 port for the OnePlus 6 and 6T, just months before they decided going on the next awesome adventure of making both fajita and enchilada possibly the best supported devices for postmarketOS.

Thanks everyone!

MSXBOOK is a cheap retro laptop designed for compatibility with a 1980s Japanese PC platform

The makers of the BOOK 8088, Pocket 386, and Hand 386 line of portable retro computers are back with a new model called the MSXBOOK. Like other products from 8086Yes!, the MSXBOOK is a compact computer with retro hardware that allows you to run software designed for decades-old computers without the need to rely on software emulators.

But this model has a bigger, higher resolution display, a […]
