A decade ago I was totally inspired by Barry from Dark Water Foundation who ran a supercool workshop at @lpoolmakefest where you could build a tiny little underwater with Lego. Just this week the synapses have fired to recreate it in a 3D printable version! Early testing is good!

Much fun in the office this afternoon poking around this online asteroid tracker from NASA.

Looking at the 3D visualisations of the asteroids and wondering if we can 3D print them and build a Museum in a Box asteroids collection...

h/t @amberfirefly for alerting us to it!

So good to see these all packed and ready to go - 5 more boxes on their way to their new owners in the US and Germany.

All over the world..... We sell Museum in a Box all over the world, except Antarctica as the penguins find it hard to turn the box on with their flippers.

We love that so many of you are right behind our little project that started 10 years ago. - History that speaks for itself!

Visible are 3 Museums in a Box sitting quietly in small carboard boxes. The lids of the boxes are open to show the Museums in a Box sitting snuggly, before the boxes are a series of postcards and a booklet with Boop on the front. The postcards that are visible show the Apollo 11 launch, Billy Holiday and a Get Started with MiaB card.3 stacked labeled boxes awaiting pick up in DoES Liverpool. In the background can be seen part of a wing from a small plane and small laser cut wooden trees on a blue carpet.

The feeling when there's only 30cm of fillament left on the roll at the end of the job, but your Bowden tube is 50cm long and yet you managed to save the print by loading another spool mid print and shunting plastic.

I wrote something!

"AI, Authenticity, & the Future of 3D Cultural Heritage"

As Meta promotes its latest generative 3D solution with quasi-cultural 3D assets dreamed up by AI, I couldn’t stop thinking about why this is a slippery slope for audiences and creators—and why the cultural heritage sector is perfectly placed to demonstrate the benefits of authentic 3D data in the age of so-called metaverse platforms.

Take a read 🔗 nebulousflynn.substack.com/p/a

Three 3D figures generated by Meta's new generative AI 'AssetGen 2.0' on display: an Egyptian pharaoh's bust, a Moai statue head, and a small astronaut figure, each on a separate grey circular stand against a plain light grey background.

Followed by three 3D scanned heritage collection digital models against a dark background: a sarcophagus with a golden face and Egyptian headdress from National Museums Scotland, a full-body Moai statue from the British Museum, and an astronaut in a white spacesuit with a yellow-tinted helmet from the Smithsonian Institution.

Reading up on CUDA on the Nvidia website and was subjected to this;

"The CPU (central processing unit) has been called the brains of a PC.
The GPU its soul."

To paraphrase Jeremy Hardy, what they are forgetting is they're our souls...

We were out yesterday at Wirral Makefest and having a lovely day telling everyone about how MiaB works. We're featured on the @DoESLiverpool stand, which is where we have our office.

This morning I had a look at the boop stats for the @museuminabox we had at Wirral Makefest on Saturday.

There were 195 boops (objects placed onto the box) over the day.

The top three objects were:
1. the heart (32 boops)
2. the prosthetic hand (23 boops)
3. assistive tech pen holder (20 boops)

The small metal NFC sticker for Museum in a Box to recognise can be seen on the back of the hand. What looks like a pink cordless computer mouse, but is actually a 3D print of a pen holder, where a pen can be clamped between the "mouse buttons" and when they're pressed the pen would make contact with the surface the pen holder is placed on.

It makes it easier for people who have trouble gripping a pen to be able to use one.

Early experiments of Meshroom photogrammetry for @museuminabox

Somehow I must have enabled the post apocalyptic filter..

Textured 3d render of a photogrammetry experiment. The idea was to make a 3d model of a pink Museum in a box with a white Lion of Knidos model on top. The reality is a melted, hole filled pink box with the Old English sheepdog of Knidos. Needs work in other words...

Now this is how you detect whether an election was stolen. Humans choose rounder numbers.

by @TheEconomist

A scatter plot titled "Fair and square? Russian federal elections, 2000-21" which visualizes the results of Russian federal elections. The x-axis represents voter turnout in percentage, ranging from 0 to 100%. The y-axis represents the percentage of votes for Putin, Medvedev, or the United Russia party, also ranging from 0 to 100%. Each dot on the plot represents a polling station. A cluster of dots appears in the upper right corner, indicating high voter turnout and a high percentage of votes for the specified candidates. A dashed rectangle highlights a grid-like pattern of dots at numbers ending in zero and five, with an annotation suggesting this pattern indicates potential foul play. The source is cited as Kobak and Shpilkin (2021).
