For #WorldAsthmaDay here is my #SciArt #embroidery she breathed (2018). I don’t have asthma myself but I have a few family members that have it quite severely and have seen how much it affects them.

An embroidery on a pale natural linen. There is a bone white diagram of a vocal apparatus, trachea, and bronchi/lungs. In between the branches of the bronchioles are small words embroidered in cursive in thin burgundy thread. They read: she breathed. Inhaled. exhaled. she knew. that breathing. was beauty. was the way. inside. to outside. when her breath. tightened. she found. ways. to soften. be still. to allow that. in. of the out. breath. to be. the. way through. she found the throughline. somehow. it. also found her. still. and breathing. deeply. each day was. new. each breath. a. different. path. always. through her. and. throughout her. such a. simple. thing, breath. such a journey. through. trees. and. branches. how the body knows. to still. itself. if we learn how. to. listen deeply.

For me it is difficult to distinguish between Xylocopa violacea and Xylocopa valga. But in this photo, this Xylocopa bee shows the back of the thorax so yellowish that it looks like another variety (Xylocopa pubescentes, Xylocopa virginica?) It would be very strange because the photo was taken in Valencia at the end of April.
Is there an entomologist in the room?
iPhone 15 Pro main camera + homemade macro lens for close focusing.

People are saying we should write jumble words to mess up the training of AIs; I say we should just write sentences like those of the length Jane Austen would write, that have such non-local structure and nested clauses that, what with the drift of attention and the window of tokens, the LLMs might start to emulate said sentences and then start to drift; one should also throw in even more semicolons (and, why not, nested parentheticals (and even em-dash-separated asides—who doesn't love author commentary—to pad out the length) for the additional context they give)—but of course, also trying to keep in mind the general readability of the flow of ideas: know your audience, after all; for me, I'm happy to just be typing into the void as a release-valve for my thoughts, even if none of you are still reading by this point; I would much rather write—and read!—read something like this than have to and and/or subtract all the additional nonsense words; even better would be Proustian nested clauses and inverted grammar, but that, unlike run-on sentences, does not come so easily, unlike (apparently) to 19th century German journalists (but of course in German one can split the verbs as far apart as one likes).

Or not.

Just received this wonderful #needlepoint gift from my daughter. Need to frame it for my office wall.

A needlepoint square featuring two fires and the words "THIS IS FINE" written in block letters composed of the repeated tiny word "FUCK".

@bomkatt It is! She has some really great stickers but doesn’t ship to Canada. I had them shipped to my sister in the US and she brought them when she came for a visit.

Filled Practice/Project/Process Journal LXVIII (27 December 2024 to 30 April 2025) and started PPP Journal LXIX. Skeleton sticker by Unstrung Studios and sakura bowl sticker was a gift from a friend.

Two ring bound dark grey MUJI journals on a painted brown surface. The left one has a reclining skeleton sticker that reads, “your skeleton may be disintegrating” and the right one has a small red ramen bowl with lid sticker with a sakura design on it.

Snowy egret with Little blue heron, San Diego River estuary Robb Field. A few years back, an old school friend started a rental near Lake Cuyamaca and invited me to come check it out. So I used the trip as an opportunity to stop by Robb Field on the way there and back. The lake was cool but there were way more birds at the estuary. It was also good to see my friend.

Two birds are standing near a body of water. One is a Snowy egret, a white bird with yellow feet, and the other is a Little blue heron, similar in size and shape but mostly dark-colored.

New day, new frog photo.

Found more Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs this morning. This one though, had found itself a little leaf nest to sit in while warming in the morning sun.

#TinyFrogThursday #Frog #EasternDwarfTreeFrog #AustralianWildlife #WildOz

A tiny green frog sitting in a "nest" of a couple of leaves forming a cup. The leaves have been chewed by grasshoppers, so that they have a jagged edge. The leaf cup is above a large citrus fruit that is starting to change colour from green to a greeny-yellow.

#WIPWednesday • Growth. I’m back to my usual routine this week so progress on this will slow down a bit as I work on writing projects. #embroidery 🧶

Lia’s fingers show a 25 by 3 inch wonky blob of black on black whipped backstitch that looks a bit like flames, but if you’ve been following this piece you’ll know it’s pubic hair. It’s definitely pubic hair. An hourglass-shaped needle minder that reads “this is taking forever” is attached to the cloth.

More happy moss. In a crappy cracking parking lot littered with broken glass, around an abandoned decrepit building, there's still beauty to be found.
