Any #rstats-ers have learning python in their 2024 resolutions?
Learning a new language, it's hard to abandon the workflow you know and love. In my last post of 2023, I recommend some of the latest python pkgs/versions with similar ergonomics

My third post: Writing as a non-native English speaker
I little thought becomes at this point:

I share a little piece concerning the nation-wide walk out for #SupportOurScience #SoutenirNotreScience today in Québec and all Canada.

See you in the streets!
After years of silently lurking around Twitter, I finally decided to say #hello to the community with a short #introduction.
I am a postdoc at #wwu University of #Münster pretending to know something about #microbialgenomics 🧫 . In my PhD I did research on #zoonotic pathogens 🐷 🐣 . More recently, I am trying to learn #metagenomics :rstats: 🧬 .
Currently, I am also administrator of miGenomeSurv, a platform to harmonize genomic #surveillance in Germany https://www.migenomesurv.org.

Starting the new year with a new contribution as Reviewer for the Journal Aquaculture Reports.
Many thanks to the editors for giving me a chance to provide comments and suggestions to the manuscript. I hope they will be useful for the final version.
@kkormas Recently, I reviewed a paper that used "fishes" for denoting more than 1 fish species. None of reviewers were concerned about this.
Happy New Year to all on mastodon and in our little community on critcare.social !
I don’t read quite (nearly) as voraciously as @iwashyna and @hauschildt but here’s a short article that I really enjoyed, and that every consumer of the scientific literature should read. It nails the flaw behind peer review:
“We treated science like it’s a weak-link problem where progress depends on the quality of our worst work.”

#birdsite "To the biology tweeps: To finish off 2022, @Odedrechavi and I thought it would be fun to hear from you about one paper from 2022 that you think we should all read. One paper per person. A few words why you think is important would be great too". https://twitter.com/PetrovADmitri/status/1608943342234267648
Interesting view on the meaning of "epigenetics":
In this piece, Sui Huang makes the case that epigenetics is usually viewed through one of two lenses: molecular or systems biology. Unifying them could lead to more clarity about the role of cis- vs. trans-regulatory mechanisms. Huang attempts to do exactly that, and concludes:
"The 2 disparate schools of epigenetics may represent different facets of the same principle of gene regulation."
A great, concise read!

Today I learned how to replace Venn diagrams with UpSet plots, originally developed by @alexlex, @hen and colleagues. https://tomsing1.github.io/blog/posts/upset_plots/
I used @jokergoo_gu@twitter.com's ComplexHeatmap R package - thanks a lot for the great open source package, and the incredibly detailed documentation, Zuguang Gu! #RStats #bioconductor #visualization #til

I am interested in the next 1-d workshop if there is another one!
Over the past few years, we @mikrobiokosmos@twitter.com offer a 1-d workshop on scientific writing and publishing, mostly for MSc and PhD students. Here is a list of relevant material which we would like to expand, so please feel free to use it and also send me your suggestions/additions; please share/circulate.

As intro of myself to MASTODON. I am ICREA research professor in Barcelona working on #3DGemomics and #4DNucleomics using experimental and computational approaches. All of it applied to provide insights into open biological questions. We normally study evolution and disease.
Kindly boost
There was another surge of incomers to Mastodon over the weekend.

@kkormas Thanks for your reply!
I visualize it like coming back to the fundamentals, the question as the origin of learning and be critical with the answers provided.
Other perspectives are totally welcome.
