Cities across the nation throw away unhoused people’s belongings during sweeps, creating cycles of hardship, ProPublica recently found.

This has been an ongoing issue in San Francisco. Read SF Public Press' reporting on how it's made it harder for people to vote. sfpublicpress.org/encampment-s

We honor those who have lost their lives to anti-trans violence and hate.

To create a world rooted in equality where trans people are safe, we need to raise our voices against the false narratives and unjust policies used to target and attack them. This starts with voting, but the work doesn't end at the ballot box.

If you're trans, learn about your voting rights transformthevote.org/voting

Ballot problems? It’s not the end of the world!

There's a remedy: the SF Department of Elections will contact you to "cure" your ballot. You must fix the problem so your vote can be counted.

Some of San Francisco's races are so close that cured ballots could impact the final results!

San Francisco voters can find out if their ballot has been counted by checking the SF Elections Voter Portal sfelections.org/tools/portal/. Californians can use the CA Secretary of State's Ballot Trax at wheresmyballot.sos.ca.gov.

Don't wait to cure your ballot. The deadline is December 3!

On this day in 1917, suffragists were brutally beaten and tortured because they were peacefully protesting for the right to vote. Learn about the Night of Terror 🧵

A group suffragists known as the Silent Sentinels on picket line in front of the Woodrow Wilson White House, circa 1917. One banner reads: “Mr. President How Long Must Women Wait For Liberty.” Text says: The Silent Sentinels were suffragists who, beginning in January 1917, peacefully picketed outside the White House every day but Sunday to advocate for women’s right to vote. This was seen as radical, scandalous, and unpatriotic for women to do. It upset the President and other men in power.A suffragist stands stoically in front of the fence around the White House Grounds. She is surrounded by a mob of men and is being arrested by police. The text says: The suffragists were harassed, beaten, and arrested, and yet more volunteered to protest. Those in prison were abused, including being force fed during hunger strikes. The civil disobedience culminated on November 14, 1917—which came to be known as the “Night of Terror.”The text says: Suffragist Dora Lewis is released from prison. She looks haggard and tired, with here eyes closed. She is supported on both arms by other women who look happy to see Dora freed from prison. The text says: The head of the prison ordered his guards to assault the women. They were choked, beaten, tortured, and terrorized. When stories about the horrific violence used against the suffragists reached the public, it became a turning point in the fight for the right to vote.Suffragist Mary Winsor holding a banner that reads: "To Ask Freedom for Women is Not a Crime., circa November 1917. Text says: The President changed his position and supported suffrage. Yet the suffragists still had to fight for the right to vote. In 1920, the 19th Amendment finally became part of the U.S. Constitution. Many white women had won the right to vote, though the fight continued for others.

It's a gorgeous day! The beach, the parks, and the ocean are calling you.

There are still 81,000 ballots to count in San Francisco. It'll be a few days before we know the results of most city elections. Even if you're eager, the Department of Elections won't release the next update until 4pm.

While we celebrate a fair and secure election, the outcome of this election has made the future for women unclear. Given the disturbing rhetoric made during this election season, we are deeply concerned about challenges we may face, particularly regarding the issues that disproportionately affect women, from health care and reproductive rights to economic security and equal representation. We must be ready to face these challenges head on. Our collective future depends on it. The League of Women Voters is dedicated to our mission of defending democracy. As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocate for policies that uplift women and ensure equitable representation in all levels of government. Our democracy needs defenders just like you. It’s time to get to work. When you’re ready, join us! Get involved as a League of Women Voters volunteer, member, or partner. We'll soon start the process for members to decide where to focus our advocacy in the coming years. And our work continues on key local issues, including community safety, fair redistricting, and open government.

Tips for mailing your San Francisco ballot. A postmark is an official imprint that indicates where and when the U.S. Postal Service accepted your mailed ballot. The Department of Elections uses the USPS postmark to decide if you mailed your ballot by the Election Day deadline. On Election Day, check the collection time on the mailbox. If that day's mail has already been picked up, your ballot won't be be counted. If you're not absolutely sure your ballot will be postmarked in time, do not mail it! Instead, use a drop box or go to a polling place.
