Check out this rocking paper💪: we demonstrate that one can get significantly DIFFERENT scores for the SAME product by following different guidelines in the EPD system that are all formally choosable. This casts doubts on both comparability and validity of results within the system. "Same product, different score: how methodological differences affect EPD results" link.springer.com/article/10.1

Well, on the principle that you should post like no-one is reading, I only today found the annual stats on my blog sterna paradisaea.net.

Clearly that's not a massive reach but a huge majority of this year's views have apparently been sent from mastodon so thank you again for reading. It's definitely motivation to keep posting...

Tell me again that #blogging is dead?

Here's the latest, a response to a piece on #ClimateGrief

New paper out by Pierre Jouannais 📄 on #LifeCycleAssessment of #FishFarming

link.springer.com/article/10.1

Reducing losses in #Aquaculture saves precious resources, and we shed light on the best reduction strategies, environmentally-wise.

Here:
- A parametrised #python LCA model for finfish farms
- that can model losses at different growth stages📈
- different mortalities and different biological feed conversion ratios...✅
- and evaluate the environmental benefit of reducing losses 👩‍💻

Great 1st practical session today at the Uni degli Studi di Cagliari, having a go at drawing movement, organizing space on the page & thinking about framing & focus. Hurray for the students!

I am doing all this teaching in Italian & it reminds me of how lucky I am to usually not have to work in a 2nd or 3rd language, unlike many in academia. 😩😅🤪

Finally wrote up some of my thoughts on #chatGPT (prompted by last week's WP stuff, but not really specific to it)

I think I now have a better sense of when and why it starts bullshitting, but how on earth it seemed a good idea to release it with that behaviour is beyond me.

#Windows11 no longer supports countless CPUs. Millions of computers will end up in the trash. This is forced obsolescence.

Why don't you act in the spirit of environmental sustainability? Lern your lessions & do your part!

The #Python based country converter coco reached version 1.0!

By now, the functionality seems quite stable and coco is already heavily used in production.
So going forward we will be conservative in changing existing functionality, avoiding breaking changes as much as possible.

As always, releases are available on #Pypi and #conda / #conda-forge:

pypi.org/project/country-conve

anaconda.org/conda-forge/count

We version 1.0 we also moved to a new home, github.com/IndEcol/country_con

This is an effort to emphasis the community (#OpenSource) aspect of coco - I want to avoid the impression that this is just "my" project (but of course I will continue developing it).

And with version 1.0 we also switch to the new pyproject.toml based build system - many thanks to @mwtoews for implementing this.
And of course a big thank you to all other contributors:

github.com/IndEcol/country_con

If you want to read more about the capabilities of coco, check the readme here

Currently sailing through lots of floating sargassum seaweed, rather depressingly full of bits of #plastic, in the open #ocean over 250 miles from the nearest land

A brownish patch of seaweed floating on the ocean surface. Specks of colour here and there are various plastic items like bottle lids.

In danish media today: #DanskeBank (largest🇩🇰 bank) criticised for #greenwashing. Claims to "integrate #sustainability in *everything* they do" but invests millions € in #fossilfuels companies. The bank's reply "we need to support these companies in the green transition" is at best naive as conveniently ignores these companies make large profits and do not need support for green tech investment, that the bank is instead not making available to others. dr.dk/nyheder/viden/klima/dans

@erinnacland @academicchatter

just to drive the point home: the fact that there are 81 scholars who publish an article every 5 days means that journal publication has now been completely gamified & the most prolific researchers are just optimizing to win the game.

This is Goodhart's law in action: publication is now more signal than noise for quality scholarship.

the question is whether the scholarly community acknowledges this & changes it's standards of assessment.
