That was a wild night. That was history happening in real time.

Apologies for everyone outside of Australia for the torrent of toots.

We just kicked into oblivion the most fasci party leadership in Australian political history. It felt good to watch a decent number of voters push back against what they saw being imported from America. Gotta celebrate the wins. They happen far too infrequently.

What does the word creativity mean to you?

Thinking beyond the box. Ranging beyond the status quo. Shaking things up. Trusting your own instincts to bring something into the world we've not quite seen before.

Security AI is not neutral. It’s reinforcing the systems we already have — and who they exclude.

Facial recognition, risk scoring, behaviour prediction — EU governments are building AI tools into policing and migration systems already marked by racism, over-surveillance and discrimination.

Policymakers talk about “debiasing” these tools, but sidestep the real issue: AI is being deployed to reinforce structures of exclusion, not to dismantle them.

Trump has launched the US into an American version of Mao’s Cultural Revolution.

I’ve never heard it framed this way, but wow, is it accurate. The political hysteria and attempt to ‘purge wokeness’ from the entire American cultural landscape is close to a perfect parallel.

Working on a planetary romance* short fiction draft before breakfast while listening to Soundgarden's Superunknown is definitely a Mood.

*A Sesen story which I finished/beta'ed in 2014 and have been reworking for years and years. Sigh.

This is the only unsubmitted/unpublished story in my "Tower of the Rosewater Goblet" suite of stories that I wrote in 2014.

At some point, a Sesen collection will be published, I guess.

If you want to know more about my Sesen short stories, this sub-Q interview is a good place to start:

Been re-listening (after years!) to Soundgarden's Superunknown this past week and it has me in all my Gen-X feels.

What if Psyche was a Gen-X Malaysian transplanted from her home because of an otherworldly visitation? What if there were a race of Cupids? Read on to find out more in this mythic fantasy with cozy vibes, found family and dark academia overtones. 🧜‍♀️ 🧜 🧜‍♂️ 🌊

Let me put it this way: Have you ever read a Malaysian retelling of Cupid and Psyche that features Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun"?

Shy, solitary leopards might lose out to tigers and lions in the game of charisma, but the rosette-patterned big cats are incredibly adaptable — they can survive in the densest of cities just as easily as in forests, grasslands and high mountains.

For International Leopard Day on May 3, we look back at some of Mongabay’s recent coverage of leopards, particularly in South Asia where they can often be found living alongside human settlements.

I don't often plug stuff but as it's #BandcampFriday where artists receive all the profits from their sales and a dear friend of mine has just released his latest EP (digital) it would be rude not to.

Top quality Analogue Techno tracks from someone in the game for 30 years. If you like Jeff Mills this might be for you.

#WordWeavers 5/2: Tell us something you liked about a recent passage you’ve written.

In my first draft, I never liked how I introduced the giant character Bran. It was one of those chapters you kinda stumble through just to get the rest of the story. But I feel I got his voice and attitude a little better the second time around. I also wrote an actual introduction for my other MC, Branwen.

Here's a snippy then.

From across the field, one of the regents from Powys spoke up.
“My lord, please indulge me. We were invited here for a joyous wedding feast, but we were never told the bride or groom. Will you enlighten us?”
Bran laughed like a bolt of thunder.
“So eager are we to begin feasting, eh?” scoffed the giant. “Ha! Maybe I’ll make you earn it, little king! Shall we see how many of your men it takes to lift my pinky finger off the ground? The Picts to the north did so with only seven men. Beat that!”

As this is labour day, I would like to remind us all that if everyone who is not mega rich would stop cooperating with the mega rich, their wealth would mean nothing.

Money is only a tool that we made up to make trading easier, but somehow we elevated it to an ends, instead of the means it was meant to be, and if we all collectively decide that the mega rich's money is no good for us, their power will greatly decrease if not disappear.

This is why the rich and powerful put effort in keeping us divided, for instance, by sponsoring and endorsing nazi parties around the world.

It's because their biggest nightmare is that we, the lower classes, will realise that no matter the colour, gender identity, sexuality, etc, we have more in common with each other, and that the real cause of our issues are the people hoarding wealth like they're fantasy dragons.
