I thought it was about time I posted some pics of my friend's allotment that I'm helping out on this year. It's tiny (probably only an 8th of a full-sized one!) but it's in a lovely and peaceful location, and I'm going to have to be careful that I don't end up living there! 😅 #AllotmentGardening #Allotments #Gardening #Kent #England

A small, somewhat overgrown, allotment garden with wood-edged beds and chipped-bark paths.A small wood-edged vegetable plot with an assortment of (over-planted) courgettes, gherkins, sweetcorn, and tomatoes. The same bed as in the previous photo, but after weeding, and when the sun came out. Things always look so much better when it's sunny! ☀️🙂

@zeborah @witless @BobLefridge Also recycling books just feel so wrong. We have a few boxes of old programming and software books that are very out of date. Not sure what to do with them, but recycling them just feels so wrong..because... books.

@zeborah @witless @BobLefridge ahh that makes sense. I guess arguing around cost is wrong anyways (buying into their justification), because it is the principle around it is wrong to destroy things that are useful for others or even valuable in terms of history or money.

@witless @BobLefridge don’t they still have to cancel/withdraw the books to shred them? I would volunteer too.

This is sick. The National Library of New Zealand has over 500,000 "excess" books. They claim it's cheaper to shred them than to sell them to second-hand book dealers.

Some of these books will be rare, but the Library seems determined to destroy them. Surely they could trust a small group of booksellers to save the good ones?

Winter in the orchard. Surprisingly much to do despite the bare trees. New pear rootstock to plant. Grafting. Old trees to remove for more airflow. And a lot of pruning. All weather dependant, as the grass sward is wet and fragile. The Shropshire sheep have been moved to another paddock, the pear orchard where we have daffodils (not yet showing but will soon so the sheep are in for another move) to let the grass rest.

@airshipper I get supplies online and make them once in awhile. Takes ages but so worth it. I have only made vegetarian ones, usually just coconut shortening and stock cube for the masa, pablano and coby cheese (ok substitute) filling.

Discovered some tamales (not very old, but forgotten) in the freezer… yum!!!

We can't let the Atlas Network set NZ policy. It only takes ten minutes to make a submission on the Regulatory Standards Bill and there are only two boxes to fill in.

1. Under 'comments' make sure you state clearly that "I oppose the Regulatory Standards bill." You might mention the extraordinary amount of power the bill would give to one Minister (who has serious connections to the Atlas Network). And your thoughts on taxpayers being expected to compensate extractive corporates for loss of profits, when those companies are operating sunset industries and destroying our environment.

2. Under 'recommendations' again reinforce that the Bill and its proposed updates should be rejected. You might also want to add a line opposing a money-wasting referendum.

That's it. Go for it! Submissions close 1.00pm, Monday, 23 June 2025.

Just found out today there is no way to deposit a check/cheque in #NewZealand. Any USA/UK folks here in #Aotearoa know how go about cashing a government cheque?
