How many countries could feed their own population with a healthy and sustainable diet on their own?

You might be surprised how few could manage to be self-sufficient! And that leaves many vulnerable to breaks in supply - whether by war, natural disaster or trade disagreement. Researchers at our Uni and Edinburgh investigated: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

The research considered seven food groups that are part of the WWF's Livewell diet.

Researchers publish fact-check on deportations in Germany

The EC presented its draft of a new EU Return Directive, essentially following the tightening and restrictions already practised. But will these policies achieve what they set out to do? And do they contribute to greater security?

MORE project – a consortium of 11 institutions across Europe researching return and deportation policies – carried out a multilevel analysis: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

Sonderveranstaltung zum internationalen Tag der Planetarien - 100 Jahre Planetarium & Öffentliche Führung Astrophysik

Diesen Mittwoch, 7.

Magma in motion: when is an eruption triggered?

International research team investigated how long it took before a volcanic eruption happened following warning signals deep down inside the Earth. They analysed deposits from 40,000 years ago to identify some of the factors: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

5,700-year storm history shows rise in tropical storms and hurricanes in the Caribbean

An international research team analysed sediments from a drill core for pollen, algae and coarser-grained layers of particles, which are indicative of storms: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

Research at #ScienceAdvances: science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

This is a very narrow image. It shows a drill core of sediments which show stripes of different thicknesses, colours and shades. This is a high-resolution photograph of the drill core from a depth of 100-140 cm and it shows the greenish-grey, fine-grained marine sediments with annual stratification and a total of 13 coarser-grained layers indicative of storms (EL36-47).

Artificial neurons organize themselves

Living neurons receive signals from different sources, process them and pass an output signal on to other neurons. Researchers from the Göttingen Campus CIDBN, MPI-DS & Uni programmed “infomorphic neurons” and constructed artificial neural networks. They found similarities with biological models and that artificial neurons used independent learning to solve tasks: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

Research at #PNAS: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2408

Living neurons receive signals from different sources, process them and pass an output signal on to other neurons (on left hand side and looking very much like a tree with roots and branches). In the artificial neuron model, this information processing can be described and improved by a learning objective (right hand side, looking more like three funnels feeding into another funnel). Similar to their biological models, this independent learning allows novel artificial neurons to solve tasks in a self-organized way.

What would make you reach deeper into your pocket to pay for sustainable chocolate?

Researchers at our Uni looked at the influence of emotive social media posts. It turns out there is an effect, but how long does it last? uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

Image shows a bar of chocolate broken in half. It is glossy, dark brown with sort of sparkly crumbs where snapped into two and looks very inviting. Chocolate like this can be produced in a range of different conditions. The researchers investigated how emotional messages influence the willingness to pay for fairly produced chocolate.
