🚨 Antarctic sea ice retreat hitting a staggering milestone.

If you feel paralyzed not knowing what to do, the most underrated thing you can do is:

Look at your hometown!

i.e. see if your urban environment is sprawled, car-dependent, and hostile toward dense, affordable dwellings, and do something at the LOCAL level. You have more power than you think!

Never to late to consider being an #urbanenvironmentalist with the likes of @zack_subin

Yesterday morning's activity was walking a mile under the Central Freeway spur in SF (I wore a 😷) with dozens of folks from YIMBY Latinx, @urbanenviroca, and others to reimagine what it could be if it was removed-- housing, green space, busways and bikeways?

Fittingly, we ended at a green where the old spur was removed after the '89 earthquake.

Do you think that free parking is what makes cities great? πŸ™ƒ

After you read @henrygrabar’s excellent book, sign our @sfyimby @urbanenviroca petition to extend meter hours and fund SF transit!

My phone comments today to the #CALeg Senate Budget Subcommittee:

"I'm a volunteer with @urbanenviroca living in SF.
I live in a 1 car, 2 adult household and bike & use transit for most of my trips.

I want to thank the committee for considering some transit bridge funding, but I urge you to provide more funding for transit to prevent an irreversible decline if we hit the fiscal cliff.

Transit is critical for our climate goals. To be blunt, we can fall behind 1 yr in our EV goals and catch up. If we let transit systems deteriorate we can't easily get them back.

The federal government has given the state unprecedented resources and it is up to our state government to spend it wisely-- let's use it in ways that support our state policy goals and reallocate some of the highway funding to help save transit."

Keep it up @seamlessbayarea & other #SurviveAndThrive coalition members!

One full #BART train moves 1500 people. If those riders drove instead, the line of cars would be 6 miles long.

And think about how much parking they would need.

Mobility in cities is about space.

Great ads on trains and along highways. HT @RebeccaForBART

1/ How to improve Levittown-style suburbs: youtube.com/watch?v=jNuRpYaPLu #Urbanism #Suburbs
* Increase population density. Tricky: Will there be enough parking space? Yes, if density isn’t increased everywhere. Also: Mass transit and other alternatives to cars become more viable with higher density.
* Go from single use (shopping malls, exclusively residential areas, etc.) to mixed use (areas containing a mix of residences, smaller shops, bars, offices, etc.).

Nothing has changed our family's everyday life more than getting our first #EBike.
I'm breathing much more fresh air. I'm in touch with the weather much more, see unknown places and tracks in my hometown. I'm much more active than before.
Bike is our default now.

It's led to another E-Bike (cargo) which has led to selling our car.
Which has led to taking the train even more than before when we go places. Which has led us to new places.

It's had such a positive impact on our lifes, it's magic.

"The report makes clear that simply replacing gasoline with batteries won’t be enough: cities must also dramatically curtail the use of automobiles and avoid 'locking in' future emissions by building more car-dependent infrastructure." Via @Streetsblog

STUDY: Researchers found almost all road users broke the law, but while motorists mostly broke road rules to save time, the most common reason for people on bikes to break road rules was personal safety. And yet bike-riders get more scorn & scrutiny for the rule-breaking, despite motor vehicles literally being the source of the danger. V/@carltonreid@urbanists.social
