economist, healthcare manager... whoops, this is not linkedin, I don't have to impress headhunters with my papers here

I work as a linux admin, study languages and programming in my free time, use light themes, and read Murakami pretty much anytime I can - some other stuff I really like in no particular order: FLOSS, running, yoga, Seoul, decentralization, self-hosting, Chongqing, Xi'An

I ate (and made) a sharp, spicy tomato and courgette salad 🥗 My twist was to add a little bit of mint which works well with the vinegary dressing. It's an absolute delight in this summer heat.

President “I AM PEACE” has been in office five months as of last Friday. So far he has bombed Yemen and Iran, talked openly about occupying Gaza, and has threatened Panama and Greenland with invasion. None of these have the support of the public or Congress.

Lately, I've been trying to get back into German - while I have studied it for a long time, I never managed to get it to the same level as my English. Currently reading my first ever actual German book (not comics, not a graded reader), and - to my surprise - it's nowhere near as difficult as I thought it would be. It seems the real challenge will indeed be the active usage of the language - speaking, writing. Anyone has tips for that? #german #languages #foreignlanguage #languagelearning #CEFR

@nekohayo I’m really curious how low-spec I need to get for gnome to become unusable - have yet to see how my T60 with just 2.5GB of RAM holds up

With performance improvements in over the last 2 years, as of GNOME 48 I can say we are mostly on par with "lightweight" desktop environments in terms of responsiveness, on any Intel / AMD hardware from the last 15 years (if you use an nVidia GPU: get a real GPU, you masochist).

I see no real advantage for "light" DEs on for today's old hardware.

Below: mom's X220 (from 2012), & dad's AMD desktop (from 2009).

My own PC has an AMD GPU from 2013 + CPU chipset from 2009.

As search is getting increasingly bogged down with ads, Ai crap, and SEO is becoming a game Google is losing, I took a look at how you can "fix" some of Google's problems, and the alternatives that I personally use, or have used in the past, plus a few others I don't use but might be interesting.

Web search isn't in a good place right now, but there are solutions!

Do I make smart decisions?

Well... back in the day I bought Windows Vista Ultimate to play Shadowrun on Games for Windows - Live.

So I think that answers your question.

@cameron_bosch @Siucraym @thelinuxEXP I agree, I also use some extensions, and I do believe the ones that are used by the majority should be added to the built-in ones.

I still don’t count this as a negative against gnome, because I don’t need to set up my distro from zero often enough for this to be an inconvenience. Install, add that 3 extension I need, all done in less than 10 minutes - the same amount of time I need to customise KDE Plasma or XFCE to fit my workflow better.

2025-05-16

@Siucraym @thelinuxEXP one could argue that it is a step forward, since now everyone can tailor it to their workflow better through extensions if they are not satisfied with the base in itself

What was a moment in a TV show or Movie that irreversibly changed your brain when you were young?

Mine? Quantum Leap. "Dr. Sam Becket never returned home."

Wait? TV shows can have bad endings? All of this buildup and we need to live with this feeling forever?

There are some incredibly powerful things in our universe.

The brightness of gigantic quasars.
The gravity near an event horizon of a black hole.
The persistence of a friend asking you if you've watched that TV show they recommended months ago.
