Aussie abodes in summer!
The time when the hot tap is the hottest tap & the cold tap is also the hot tap 🫀.
The time when going outside sears the eyeballs & all jobs are done at dawn or dusk if you have to.
The time when walking on asphalt sticks to your shoes.

NGC 55: A Galaxy of Nebulas
Image Credit & Copyright: Wolfgang Promper; Text: Ogetay Kayali (MTU)

Explanation: Can you see nebulas in other galaxies? Yes, some nebulas shine brightly enough -- if you know how to look. Clouds of hydrogen and oxygen emit light at very specific colors, and by isolating them, astronomers and astrophotographers can reveal structures that would otherwise be too faint to notice. This deep, 50-hour exposure highlights glowing hydrogen (red) and oxygen (blue) across galaxy NGC 55, viewed nearly edge-on. Also known as the String of Pearls Galaxy, NGC 55 is often compared to our Milky Way's satellite galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), although NGC 55 lies much farther away at about 6.5 million light-years. The resulting image uncovers a sprinkling of emission nebulas within and sometimes above the galaxy's dusty disk, offering a detailed look at distant star-forming regions.

A galaxy is shown that has a lot of blue and red dots in it. The galaxy is an long elliptical blob across the middle and not a classic spiral.

And yes, we hope to get to the Richmond event next week. We used to attend that one regularly when we lived a short walk from it, but after 2019 we avoided it for ... reasons.

I hope the roo is OK.

I'll assume he meant "flailing" and that he didn't rip its skin off!

My gardening has been lax for the last 8 months due to ill health, and I am saddened by the casualties among my wards. However, enough have survived to bring some cheer.

The Damsel has soldiered through it. She got a little dry at times, but as you can see, has continued to bloom. A small rose bush stands in a terracotta pot, with a brick wall behind. Some stakes help give her shape. The Dame had a late start to her year and is currently without blooms in the heat, but she finally put on a huge display just before Christmas. Here a standard rose in a concrete ring is festooned with over 20 large flowers, some just opening, some past their prime. She stands in a short lawn, with small trees and a brick wall behind her.

πŸͺΌThe Jellyfish Nebula

This thing is a bit tricky to get from down here, but the weather cooperated between xmas and new year and I was able to snap a few nights worth of data of this scene in Gemini.

On the right, a relatively bright supernova remnant makes a jellyfish shape. That thing exploded probably some tens of thousands of years ago.

To its left is a region of gas that is *forming* stars. It is much fainter and doesn’t have a popular name, its is simply known by a catalog number - Sharpless 249. Its shape most reminds me of one of the dancing raw chickens in the Sledgehammer video.

This is about 7 hours of narrowband Ha/[OIII] data with a William Optics RedCat 61, Altair Astro 6nm duo band filter and ASI294MC Pro camera.

#astrophotography #space #Astrodon

Two mostly red nebulae side by side. On the right a bright and sharply constrained supernova remnant. It has a bright arc of gas running vertically with fainter tendrils pointing to the right and then curving down, giving. jellyfish shape.

The nebula on the left is fainter, deep red and more diffuse. It has many dark bands and tufts of dust across it. At its bottom is a fairly bright yellow star, at its top a bright blue star that illuminates some of the dust around (or in front of) it.

We had a bit of a day out at the Lunar New Year event in Footscray. We watched some dances and wandered the sideshows, admiring the giant capybara plushies that one was offering (no pics of that, alas) and ate some street food.

Tomorrow we must again hide from the heat, but today we had fun and got a just a little sunburnt, and the weather and temperature were perfect.

My friend gave me the blue blanket for Christmas, but let's be real--it was never really mine.

A black cat and tabby cat lay loaf-like on a couch, on top of a navy blue blanket (the kind with that soft white sherpa fabric on the back). They are both looking at me, the photographer, as if to say, "what? You got up. This is ours now."

The story of my life: our Christmas cactus is about to bloom πŸ™„

Anyway, here's a picture from 2010. It's the wonderfully dilapidated Bing Kong Tong building in Isleton, California. About 10 years ago this building was restored and is now a museum and meeting hall.

#photography #architecture

A ramshackle, two-story building in the Sacramento River Delta town of isleton, California (pop. 794).

The first floor has an orange door and a wildly painted mural. The second floor, with deteriorating wood siding and boarded up windows and doors, leans wildly to the right. The roof has a crown facade and a flagpole that stands almost upright. Almost.

Behind the building is a roadway on top of a levy that keeps the river water from pouring into the town.

Looking at the emergency.vic.gov.au map, I see only a couple of small fires near us, so for "Victoria" above a narrower reading may be in order, at least where I live.

In the wider sense it's true, however. If the crews can't contain the larger fires tomorrow, the heatwave will have two more days to work on them.

Very smoky out, and I caught a blood red moon setting. Still over 30C.

Victoria's burning.

A lazy crescent moon setting above a rooftop. The moon is blood red, though the camera makes it look brighter.

Why I am on Mastodon today. (We are hiding from the heat. And yes, I am aware that places not far from here are going to get much hotter than this today and for the next few days. 😬 )

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology showing outside temperature 32.9℃, headed for a max of 40℃ today.
