✨ From old to roots to 'roads✨

This old wardrobe has found its new home in my Appalachian office. Once part of a matched suite in someone’s bedroom nearly a century ago, now it will hold #genealogy #books and decades of my research of my Appalachian family and history. It is ready to take it's place and store my little treasures of Ancestry Roads.

With its cabriole legs, deep wood tones, and quiet history, it feels right at home here in the mountain but I am convinced this was built in the Midwest. I bought it over a decade ago during an auction of from Detroit. It used to store my sons Skylanders and video games.

I think the Queen Anne legs and veneered front panels place this in the Depression era to post-war period.

A vintage wooden wardrobe stands on small casters. The front has two paneled doors with a brass knob in the center. Inside, one side holds four drawers and a shelf above them, while the other side is open for hanging clothes. The wood shows its age with scratches and marks, but the overall piece has a warm, rich brown tone. The wardrobe is shown with both doors open. On the left side are four stacked wooden drawers with simple carved handles, and a shallow shelf above them. On the right side is an open vertical space with a wooden hanging rod for clothes. The wood is medium brown with a glossy finish, and the interior shows some scuffs and wear from age and use.

Probably one of the last full blooms until I decide where to transplant this rose bush and four others. They are up against the front porch that is getting renovated and these will get trampled.

But what a beauty to behold. Someone must of known I love pink roses.

The image shows a close-up of a single pink rose bloom. The petals are large, soft, and slightly ruffled at the edges, with deep pink along the outer edges fading into a lighter pink and almost white toward the center. At the very heart of the flower are tiny golden-yellow stamens surrounding a deeper orange center. The background is blurred, but you can faintly see green leaves, giving the rose the focus of the image.

🚧 Big changes in the bungalow! What was once an *outdoor porch wall* (with the power box exposed to the elements) is now being framed in to become a **new private bathroom**. 🛁✨

That meant moving the power setup and shutting off the electricity for a bit which means I might actually read a book vs surf the web. But it’s all part of turning this old mountain home into something fresh while keeping its character. 🏡⚡

Every project feels like a step closer to making this century-old place a dream retreat in the Blue Ridge.

The photo shows part of a house renovation project in progress.

You’re looking at a wall that used to be part of an outdoor porch but is now enclosed. The wall has exposed wood framing on the left and right sides, with a mix of old log-style siding and newer construction materials. In the center is a **white electrical meter box** and a **white utility cabinet** mounted on the wall. Several black cables are looped and hanging loosely near the meter, with wires and conduit running down toward an outlet at the bottom.

To the right of the cabinet is a window with closed blinds, surrounded by old, weathered siding. The floor is unfinished plywood subflooring, with some tools and orange extension cords lying around. The ceiling beams are exposed, showing the raw construction.

The overall scene feels very much like a “mid-renovation” moment — utilities still in place, rough framing exposed, and the space clearly being transformed into something new (in this case, a bathroom).

✨ In Appalachia, carports are more than just a place to park. They’re part of everyday #mountain life. Over the years, rain and mud wore this one down, but now it’s getting a fresh start. 💪 We ordered **3 tons of gravel** and that wasn't enough for the other carport to get it looking good again too.

From trucks to tractors, these simple structures keep the weather off what matters most. 🚗🌧️ Sometimes it’s the little upgrades that make a big difference in mountain living and to make your property look nice. 🏔️

The image shows a work-in-progress gravel project under a metal carport.

In the foreground, there is a large pile of gray gravel spread across part of the ground. A gray wheelbarrow, partially filled with gravel, is sitting on top of it, with wooden handles extended outward. A shovel is leaning upright against one of the carport’s metal posts, ready for use.

In the background, a red Ford pickup truck is parked on the grassy yard just outside the carport. To the right side, some wooden boards and tools are placed on a simple work structure, suggesting other projects are ongoing nearby. The surrounding area is lush and green, with grass and trees framing the scene.

It gives the impression of a hands-on home or yard improvement project, with gravel being laid down as a foundation—possibly for parking, storage, or stabilizing the carport floor.

✨ Preserving history, one brushstroke at a time ✨

This 100-year-old wood siding has seen generations come and go here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The boards are worn, weathered, and imperfect just like the stories they’ve held. I've just started to research those families and their #FamilyStory while tracing their #FamilyTree.

Instead of covering that past, we’re honoring it. A fresh coat of "Cottage White" brightens the old bones, but the history still whispers through every crack and knot in the grain. I tried to do only one light coat with a larger nap roll on brush so some of the knots, grain, and worn wood might show.

Life in an #Appalachian #mountain #bungalow means holding onto what came before while making it livable for today. This will become my Mom's bedroom. Every coat of paint is a promise: that these walls will keep standing strong, carrying our memories forward into the next hundred years. 🏡🎨

A close-up view of old wooden siding next to a window frame. The boards are painted an off-white color, but the paint is chipped and uneven in places. Some boards show cracks, small gaps, and signs of age, with darker areas where the wood is weathered. The edge of the siding, near the window trim, looks patched and layered with old paint.A wider shot of a wall covered in the same old off-white wooden siding. A small window with white trim sits slightly off-center to the right. A vertical white-and-green pipe runs from floor to ceiling, breaking up the wall. The boards show visible wear, uneven edges, and multiple layers of paint. The floor in front of the wall is bare plywood subflooring, and the ceiling beams above are exposed.A paint sample image labeled “Cottage White, Behr Paint.” The paint color is a soft, creamy off-white with a slightly warm undertone, shown inside a round paint can.

How is your Saturday going?

We are sipping Cheerwine, rocking on the porch, and soaking up those mountain breezes 🍒✨ Nothing says *weekend in the Southern Appalachians* like a glass full of ice, a view of the hills, and the sweet sound of cicadas in the evening.

Here’s to slowing down, front-porch living, and a little taste of Carolina tradition. 🏡🌄

A clear glass filled with ice and a dark red soda sits on a wicker table. Next to it is a red can of Cheerwine, a cherry-flavored soft drink with white lettering that says “Drink Cheerwine Since 1917.” In front of the can is a large white plastic hair clip. The setting is a screened-in porch with white wooden walls and windows letting in daylight. In the background are wicker chairs, a blue patterned rug, a fan, and an American flag visible outside through the screen. The scene suggests a refreshing break on a warm day.

When you renovate an old house, patience is required. 🏡✨

Today's twist? We’re gaining a #bathroom but had to remove the #window to create a #door. The bedroom-to-bathroom pass-through is becoming closer to reality. A paneled barn door with frosted glass will allow for fresh light to pour in. 🌞

It’s funny how every change tells a story — one additional bathroom but different view out the window. And in this little mountain #bungalow, every ray of light feels like gold. 🌿

This photo shows a cozy bedroom with a white color theme. A bed covered in a white quilted comforter with white pillows dominates the space. A soft, fur-patterned throw blanket is casually draped at the foot of the bed. In front of the bed is a small beige step stool with carpeted treads, likely for pets or easy access to the bed.

On the right wall hangs a flat-screen TV and a tall decorative mirror with an ornate white frame. The mirror reflects part of the room and the curtains from a nearby window.

At the far end of the room, there’s an unfinished doorway with exposed wood around the frame, leading into what appears to be a bathroom. Inside, a white shower stall can be seen, along with bare wood framing and a weathered ceiling above. The overall feeling is a mix of comfort and renovation in progress.
