#AtlasRocket

Much of Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center is filled with thick scrub land.
The bushes and shrubs and palmettos provide a habitat for very unique species in Florida, like the #endangered Florida Scrub Jay.
Beyond that scrub land, the ULA Vertical Integration Facility with an Atlas V rocket seems to rise out of a sea of green scrub land.

Next to the tower is an Atlas five rocket with a white cone on top, a white cylinder joining it, then a narrower white cylinder, and finally a wider, copper-colored one.
The bottom half of the image is covered in green plants, with palmettos and shrubs of many types visible.
The upper portion of the image shows a cloudy, gray sky.

The #Atlas launch vehicle has evolved over the many years. The first Atlas SM-65 was a nuclear missile modified to launch spacecraft. Upper stages were added like Agena and Centaur.
The #skin of the #AtlasRocket was made of stainless #steel and thinner than a US #dime. The tanks could not support their own weight and had to be pressurized with gas to prevent them from crumpling.
This was true from Atlas, to Atlas-Centaur, to Atlas I, Atlas IIAS, and Atlas III.
The #AtlasV’s skin is made of isogrid aluminum; this being a type of machined aluminum that removed triangular sections from the inside of the tank walls, saving weight while preserving strength.
A copper-colored outer cladding is added.

#SpaceSaturday: This is a refurbished #Atlas #rocket #engine LR89-NA-7 produced by #Rocketdyne until 1960S. The original #AtlasRocket was a “Stage-and-a-Half” type rocket. #Engineers had concerns about the reliability of igniting an engine at high altitude, so the Atlas launched with all 3 engines burning, and would then jettison the two “booster” engines on either side of the “sustainer” engine after about two and a half minutes and continue to fly on the remaining engine.
The Soviet R-7 also ignited all its engines at liftoff, then jettisoned the four outboard stages, tanks and engines, and leave only a single set of fuel and oxidizer tanks and a set of engines remaining, a method called parallel staging.
This #RocketEngine is on display the Air Force #Space and #Missile #Museum in Cape #Canaveral, #Florida.
