This #AtlasV is carrying a #NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite for NASA’s TDRSS system that allows it to maintain communication with its spacecraft in Earth orbit.

This #AtlasV is flying in the 401 configuration, with a 4 meter fairing, no solid rocket boosters, and single engine on its upper stage.

After the normal carrier #rocket for the #Cygnus resupply spacecraft to the International Space Station, the Antares, exploded due to faulty engines, Orbital ATK decided to #launch 2 Cygnus spacecraft on the United Launch Alliance #Atlas V.
Since the #AtlasV was more capable than Antares, it allowed an enhanced version of Cygnus to fly.
In this #photograph, the #AtlasVRocket has cleared all pad obstacles.

The #Atlas launch vehicle has evolved over the many years. The first Atlas SM-65 was a nuclear missile modified to launch spacecraft. Upper stages were added like Agena and Centaur.
The #skin of the #AtlasRocket was made of stainless #steel and thinner than a US #dime. The tanks could not support their own weight and had to be pressurized with gas to prevent them from crumpling.
This was true from Atlas, to Atlas-Centaur, to Atlas I, Atlas IIAS, and Atlas III.
The #AtlasV’s skin is made of isogrid aluminum; this being a type of machined aluminum that removed triangular sections from the inside of the tank walls, saving weight while preserving strength.
A copper-colored outer cladding is added.

A #ULA #AtlasV 4-meter fairing, hand-painted with the #NASA logo, the #RBSP program logo, the #UnitedStatesFlag, and the #AtlasProgram #logo. The 4-meter fairing provides less volume for payloads than the 5 meter version, but weighs less.
After launch, the Radiation Belt Storm Probes were renamed the Van Allen Probes once in orbit, and continue to study the Van Allen Belts and Earth’s magnetosphere.
