We spent three-plus days exploring the Palouse region of eastern Washington State last week, and I'd say we spent a bunch of it on the 14-mile stretch of road between Colfax and Pullman. On Shawnee Road, just off US 195, sits this ubiquitous sign of life in the region - the red barn. And you know I'm a sucker for sunrise through the trees to boot.

It is the middle of dawn. The sun is low, but in the sky, poking through the top of the pale pink, orange, and yellow clouds on the horizon. The rest of the scene is a series of hills, covered in rich green pastures with some daisies scattered throughout.

Properties have been fenced off from one another with thin, unpainted natural logs.

A lens flare emanates from the sun towards the bottom of the canvas. A few small flocks of indistinct, dark-plumed, probably sleek and fairly large birds soar in the distant sky.

In the distant background are a pale red barn on the left, a large herd of Holstein cows in the center, and a pale blue barn with an awning and silo on the right. A dirt road runs along the left side of the background and off the picture plane at about the center of the left hand side of the canvas.

In the nearer part of the background are a barn-like red house on the left and a small flock of sheep at the center. There are two ewes, a ram, and a lamb (the lamb is reared on its hind legs, as though at play).

In the distant foreground, on the right, are a Hereford cow and a belted cow, lumbering up over a hill towards the viewer to graze.

In the very near foreground is a Holstein cow in repose, chewing cud. She is the primary feature of the lower left quadrant of the canvas.

The artist's signature can be seen in the distance on the left-hand side, peeking over (and partially obscured by) the horizon.
