Fingal’s Cave, a 50-million-year-old basalt cathedral off Scotland’s coast, reveals nature’s precision — geometric lava columns, perfect acoustics, and volcanic artistry shaped by time, fire, and ocean waves.

The sea from Vík í Mýrdal (or #Vik as it's usually known) on the south coast of #Iceland for #MeerMittwoch this week. A beautiful day in December 2018 with lovely views to the distant petrified trolls (or basalt columns if you prefer).

Standing on a jetty formed of large, dark boulders on a beach at the boundary where the water meets the sand, the view is partly out to sea, but mostly focused on the cliffs that come from the right side of view down towards the horizon, abruptly terminating in the centre of the image. The cliffs, like the sand on the beach that is just visible as a crescent curving away from near the viewpoint around and towards the cliffs, are dark rock. While the sky is mostly clear, except for a band of cloud on the horizon, the sun is obviously low in the sky and weak, lending everything little warmth and leaving the water near the viewer almost black. Seemingly on the horizon, although actually closer than that, out to sea a little way from the end of the cliffs, are jagged rocks jutting up, like the silhouettes of stalagmites or chipped teeth.

Every time I notice those in various media, I am thinking «Yeah, basalt columns, how “original”!» And yet if I were to ever envision a fantasy world of my own, there would 100% be a location with those. I mean, they are almost too beautiful to be an actual real phenomenon, and it only makes sense to use these hexagonal beauties everywhere, taking creative liberties to create even more unreal structures with them.

A screenshot from a video game. A woman stands in a surreal landscape with towering rock formations primarily composed of basalt columns, scattered debris, and with a cloudy sky with rocks floating in stasis behind. There is a basalt “tower” directly behind her, a rocky path she stands on with some greenery, floating fragments of land far away in the sky, and a broken ferris wheel down below.

A wide-angle shot of the Giant's Causeway at sunset. The foreground is dominated by hexagonal basalt columns of varying heights, leading towards the ocean on the left where waves gently lap at the unique rock formations. In the midground, more columns extend towards a rugged cliff face that stretches into the distance under a dramatic sky. The sky is painted with warm hues of orange and yellow near the horizon, transitioning to softer blues above, suggesting either sunrise or sunset. The overall mood is one of natural wonder and serene grandeur.
