Battôjutsu 抜刀術 is the art of drawing the long or short sword (katana 刀 or wakizashi 脇差) at lightning speed to anticipate an attack. In addition to drawing and defensive techniques, Battô trains above all an eye for detail, constant awareness of one's surroundings (zanshin 残心), the ability to assess people and situations (honseigan 本性眼), and a relaxed, open mind (kyoshin-heiki 虚心平気).
In modern Battôjutsu, techniques (waza 技) are not only practiced as pure forms in empty space, but also applied in light or full contact training (with training weapons and appropriate protective equipment). Obstacles such as walls, pillars, stairs and passers-by are used, and improvised weapons such as thrown tea cups, overturned barrels or a small table thrown up with the foot are sometimes used.
