#BeagleChannel

We took an excursion while in Ushuaia that saw us hop on a boat and head down the Beagle Channel for around three hours. During this time we were treated to majestic views of the surrounding landscapes - particularly the impressive Martial Mountains - and got up to a sea lion colony, getting as far as the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse before heading back. It was bitterly cold but beautiful.

We're on water, on a small boat just off a rocky islet in a dark, choppy sea of other small rocky islets under a sky with a few patches of pale blue sky peeking through the bubbling, rain-filled clouds above. The horizon shows a chain of mountains along the coast, jagged with icy tops and deep shadows in the clefts. The islets are devoid of any vegetation with pale, rough rocky tops becoming dark brown, perhaps clogged with seaweed along the water line. Atop the islet in front of us there is a lighthouse. It's a simple, slightly tapered cylinder with the lamp housing at the very top protected by a railing. The lighthouse is split into three even bands of red top and bottom with white in the middle.

#Crabs, #kelp, and #mussels: #Argentina’s waters teem with life – could a #fish farm ban do the same for Chile? theguardian.com/environment/20

"In 2021, the provincial government voted to ban intensive #SalmonFarming in Argentinian waters... Everything in the sea has benefited... from the crabs to the #seaweed; they all depend on a healthy #BeagleChannel... But in neighbouring #Chile, the same protection does not exist. Things drastically changed over the years with the arrival of this industry"

The view from the Beagle Channel off the southern tip of Argentina for #MeerMittwoch today, looking towards land and the gorgeous landscape that makes up the Martial Mountains.

We spent a few hours on this stretch of water on a boat trip here in 2016. So very, very cold, but an absolutely breathtakingly beautiful part of the world.

A portrait view taken from the water and looking back towards land. It's a very overcast day with layers of grey cloud overlapping one another above. The sea is choppy and feels very cold and uninviting. The landscape beyond the water is dark and menacing too with barely any distance from the shore to where mountains with jagged peaks rise, the nearest of them topped with cloud that hides their uppermost points, further parts of these steep ranges visible in the distance, topped with snow broken up by black crevasses. The scenery is jaw-droppingly wonderful but you wouldn't want to be here without many layers of clothing.

For #MeerMittwoch here's another photo from the Beagle Channel, south of Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina and Chile. Cormorants to the right, responsible for this rocky islet's decoration, and not one, but two sea lions, with the impressive Martial Mountains in the distance.

It's a cloudy day, feeling fresh as we're out on the water looking back across a grey, choppy sea towards layers of landscape in the distance; low, darker layers in front; hillier layers showing hints of sunshine splashing through cloud cover onto their peaks behind that; dominating the background and pale and desaturated with distance, a sharp-edged, jagged mountain range filling the width of the shot with lower ranges in shadow and upper ones bright with snow in crevasses reflecting light from above. In the immediate foreground of the shot, just in front of the boat we must be standing upon, there is a small, rocky island only a couple of metres high at its highest but stretching from left to right. The island looks like it has two layers. The lower one is dark brown rocks, some wet from the action of the small waves. Above the level that the water reaches the entire surface is coated in a layer of white, some of it running down cracks. The presence of a a few dozen black and whit, upright cormorants to the right of shot tells us where this white layer comes from; years of accumulated guano. On the left side of this rocky island there is a large, male sea lion, sitting up, raising his head upwards as if hunting for some sunshine. Against the layer of brown rocks below and centre we can just make out a smaller sea lion, perhaps a female, almost hidden against the background with skin the same colour as the rocks.

For #MeerMittwoch this is on the Beagle Channel heading out from the Argentinian city of Ushuaia on a boat for a day trip. It was freezing, but fabulous. Ushuaia is the most beautiful port in the world in which to wake up in, in our opinion. The Martial Mountains make the most incredible backdrop for sunrise.

We're at the back of a small boat that's heading away from shore. We can tell that this boat has two engines at the back because it's leaving two turbulent trails of bubbling white water in the cold, inky blue, rippled surface of the sea. The sky above has some blue sky and white clouds but right now the sun is behind one of them and everything feels chilly. The land stretches across the horizon; flatter to the left, then arching around in a bay to the right behind which first hills then jagged mountains with snowy and icy peaks form a barrier. The very tops of the mountains are just touching the white clouds there. We can see there's a city of low-level buildings along the shoreline but dominating the port area from which our boat's wake indicates we've come from is a cruise ship docked at a pier. Its white form towers above the city and is only dwarfed in scale by the huge mountains in the far distance.

Some #TravelPhotography from #OnThisDay in 2016. We were in fantastic #Ushuaia, #Argentina and spent a few hours at the start of it taking a boat ride down the #BeagleChannel to see sea lions and this #lighthouse, Les Eclaireurs, also known to Argentinians as the Lighthouse at the End of the World. In Ushuaia we caught a protest against the government (second time in Argentina) and a friend of ours joined the march and held up a sign.

An overcast day with layers of clouds obscuring layers of cloud behind them. The distant landscape is one of mountainous peaks topped with ice and snow behind lower hills on a coastline. The water in front is flat and grey and between our viewpoint and the land there is a rocky island, dark at its base, then topped in a white, almost chalk-like surface and dotted with enough black birds to suspect they're the reason the island is white. Standing on the highest part of the low island is a lighthouse. It's brick, circular, and comprises three wide bands in red, white, and red, atop which is the lamp and its housing. The feeling of the image is cool and calm.

For #FotoMontag here's a shot from the #BeagleChannel south of #Ushuaia at the bottom of #Argentina. We'd taken a boat trip out, part of the reason for which was to see the sea lions up close. They were fabulous. Cormorants were also present in great numbers, and not penguins, as one American tourist exclaimed excitedly, despite the evidence of some of them flying around.

We're on a small boat on the water, close to a small, rocky islet, dark at the base where the water is lapping at its surface, but becoming white as it rises the two or three metres from the sea. That's partly because of the rock material, but likely added to from some of the dozens of cormorants covering most of the left side of the rock. Most of them are standing and could almost be mistaken for penguins, but a few of the black and white birds are flying overhead. The right side of the islet is populated by close to twenty sea lions, dark brown-skinned, laying on the rock and mostly paying no attention to our close proximity. Across the water beyond the rocky island there is a mountainous landscape, hazy with low cloud on this overcast day.
