Excellent 24.5 mile road bike route.

For those that enjoy bike rides this loop is worth considering. Ride on paved country roads along the agricultural fields in south Santa Cruz and north Monterey counties.

Our start/finish was at the Target parking lot in Watsonville (CA). The first 18 or so miles is also the first half of the yearly Strawberry Fields fun bike race. The upper right small square notch-out is at the famous Gizdich Ranch known for their berry pies.

We’re helping two of our Triathlon friends train for the bike portion of a half Ironman they’re doing this summer in Salem OR. So, while we stopped at Gizdich we didn’t have pie. We’re all building up our strength and endurance, clocking in at an average 13.1 mph on this ride. We’re building to a comfortable 14-16 mph average which is good for our age group.

We don’t think this Monterey County resident is out of touch with distressing circumstances in our nation, including surreal actions by the Commander in Chief. In fact, this local is a U.S. military veteran (unlike the C of C, ironically) and a member of Veterans for Peace.

Yet even when news is troubling, whenever we see him, he wears a bright smile. We feel sure he keeps his spirits up—regardless of the day’s news or the day’s weather— by doing lots of pedaling! Whenever we see him, as again today, he’s on his bicycle.

He is wearing blue jeans, a black winter jacket, a warm grey hat, a neon green PT strap across his chest, and a bright smile! Two bicycles parked on a rack in the "Uptown Monterey" shopping center on chilly afternoon of 23 January 2026. A man stands with his hand on his bicycle, a cargo bike with two orange panniers at rear and and a black basket in front. He is beaming with the joy of biking!

🎂Happy birthday to Liz, biking 30 miles to celebrate their 30th birthday today! 3️⃣0️⃣🎉🎈Liz and their friend Lizzy had biked from Marina, California to another #Monterey Peninsula city, #Pacific Grove, when we met them while we were walking at Asilomar State Beach. We🎵sang Liz a favorite birthday song traditional in many #Waldorf schools.

The beach dunes and Monterey Bay waters are behind them.
