Lee Morgan - Cornbread

Given this was recorded in '65, it starts off sounding more "late 60s" to me, for some reason.

Morgan, here, is joined by Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Jackie McLean (alto sax), Larry Ridley (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums). The set is four Morgan tunes and one standard (Ill Wind). Ceora is, indeed, a standout.

Fantasias for Guitar and Banjo is the debut album of the folk guitarist Sandy Bull, released in 1963 through Vanguard Records.
Recording

Bull recorded the album accompanied by Billy Higgins, a session jazz drummer who had previously appeared on early Ornette Coleman records.

The highlight of Fantasias for Guitar and Banjo is usually considered to be its opener "Blend", a lengthy improvisational piece. According to Bull, the ideas behind the piece originated from his admiration of Folkways Records, which documented ethnic music from across the world. He also claimed to being particularly inspired from hearing Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan in New York City.[3] "Blend" has been viewed as a "virtual travelogue of styles done in a then revolutionary modal tuning" - Wikipedia

Royal Flush is an album by American jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd recorded on September 21, 1961 and released on Blue Note the following year. Byrd's quintet features saxophonist Pepper Adams and rhythm section Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins.

The album is Herbie Hancock's first Blue Note session to be released.

The AllMusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine states, "For the most part, the quintet plays a set of vital hard bop... But what's really interesting is when they begin pushing the boundaries." - Wikipedia

Hank Mobley - Third Season

Yet another one of those “recorded in 1967 but released years later” Blue Note albums, this strong set by Mobley, Lee Morgan (trumpet), Cedar Walton (piano), Billy Higgins (drums), Walter Booker (bass), Sonny Greenwich (guitar), and James Spaulding (alto) is well worth seeking out.

I’m not sure the last track works, but the rest is a very enjoyable, swinging hard bop set.

Donald Byrd - Royal Flush

I guess it's 1961-day here.

An enjoyable hard bop session, and Herbie Hancock's Blue Note debut, accompanying Byrd (trumpet), Butch Warren (bass), Billy Higgins (drums), and Pepper Adams (sax).

Nice, un-limited remaster has that distinct RvG sound (including putting Hancock's piano in a cardboard box).

The Descendants of Mike and Phoebe - "A Spirit Speaks" (1974)

This album features siblings Bill Lee (bass), Consuela Lee Moorhead (piano), Grace Lee Mims (vocal), and Cliff Lee (fluegelhorn). The group was named after slave ancestors of the Lee family. This is an extraordinary record and one of the gems of the #StrataEast catalog.

Milt Jackson - At the Kosei Nenkin

1976 live album on Pablo, recorded in Japan, playing a swinging set with Ray Brown (bass), Teddy Edwards (sax), Cedar Walton (keys), and Billy Higgins (drums).

Japanese pressing retains most of the Pablo style, but without the huge Pablo Live top.

Interesting to note that Japanese gatefolds always come with the first LP in the 2nd (back) location.

Archie Shepp - "Attica Blues" (1972)

Fabulous reissue from #ImpulseRecords The sound of this lp is so much richer and deep than any digital version I've heard. A+

So many great musicians on this, including Shankar of #ECMRecords fame on violin, which would have made this possibly his earliest appearance on a recording.

A shelf with messy stacks of books is seen to the side, along with a couple of green beer bottles, and a poster of two black Olympic athletes raising their fists in protest on the podium at the 1968 Olympic Games.

Pat Metheny with Charlie Haden & Billy Higgins - 'Rejoicing' (1984) (1996 remaster)

Fine & subtle jazz album by #PatMetheny, w/ #CharlieHaden (b) & #BillyHiggins (d). Half of the material is composed by #OrnetteColeman. Sporadically, #Metheny plays his #guitarsynth and it's awesome.

Listening to Don Cherry

A well-meaning friend and music connoisseur knew of course about my weakness for Don Cherry and the CD of "Art Deco" is also in the collection for decades. Now also as vinyl. And I may state once again: what a pleasure to have this beautiful work in the collection. If only because of the beautiful cover in 30x30cm.

I just got Third Set, the third and final installment of the Quartet's live recordings in Copenhagen for (1983). These guys were at the top of their game, and the recording has so much live presence. The sound is immediate, the performance is full of energy, and the is top-notch. Walton does precision surgery on the ivories with his performances, all without machines.
