About 25-30 years ago, Cisco (then named Cisco Systems) seemed like the hot employer in Silicon Valley.
I recently met someone who works there and encouraged me to apply.
I applied for a job with a pay range that was low, but acceptable because the work seemed pretty mellow.
Yesterday morning via LinkedIn, one of its recruiters who had seen my application had reached out to me with a job that had a similar title, but the description was oriented more toward failure analysis and mentioned sometimes making reports to top management. I had similar high profile at Sony, so that was ok by me, but the pay range was the same as the job I had applied to earlier. For the level of work and responsibility, it seemed about 50% below market.
After our conversation, I reviewed Cisco's history of layoffs in recent years. They had another big one last year, so I think I'd only work there for market rate plus a premium to offset what seems like additional risk.
My enthusiasm deflated this week.
