Charlie Rouse's solo albums, known primarily as Monk's saxophonist, recorded for Strata-East, have been reissued this year. "Two Is One" is a true fusion classic, and I encourage you to check out at least the title track with its intriguing polyrhythms (Stanley Clarke on bass!).

Miles & Monk at Newport is a split album featuring separate performances by the Miles Davis sextet and the Thelonious Monk quartet at the Newport Jazz Festival. It was released in June 1964 by Columbia Records. Davis's set was recorded in 1958, and Monk's in 1963. Despite the album's title, the two artists do not perform together at either date.

On the first side of the LP was a series of high tempo performances of bebop tunes and other staples of the Davis live repertoire from 1958. The performance was contemporaneous with Davis' Milestones album...On the second side were a few numbers by Thelonious Monk's combo, from a 1963 Newport appearance. They played tribute to #theloniusmonk on many tracks (naturally, with Charlie Rouse and Ben Riley in the band), but they quickly developed their own unique sound.
