@FABSIM@mastodon.social 98% of the time, my work is my own, but there have been a few times I turned to AI.
NVIDIA, for example, I don't own a current NVIDIA card. I have an old 410 or 470 lying around that likely would use legacy drivers, if it was supported at all. So when I was making a generic config, outlining just the basics, I discovered there were 3 Wiki sources, all conflicting, plus 1 forum post, also conflicting.
Remember, the goal was just to have a basic generic configuration, and not specifically optimize the config for any particular card. A "getting to start" outline - To install the driver, have the display work, and that is it.
My work, with so much conflicting information, was crap. The community, wanted me to specify what card and what system. They wanted me to have an optimized setup, which would be helpful, but no matter how many times I said, I needed this to be "bare bones" -- No one would help.
It was worse when I specified why I wanted a generic setup (something for newbies). There are those who oppose the idea of making something easier for others. It was hard for them, and they had to go through their growing pains, so they want others to do so too. And so the moment I said, I was making something useful for newbies, I may as well have asked for someone's immortal soul.
ChatGPT, however, provided me a simple config. And I have since had someone with a current NVIDIA card test that config. -- It works.
