Satoko Fujii, Ramon Lopez – Confluence (2019, Japan/Spain)

Welcome back, friends, hope you had a chance to listen to some excellent music while I took a bit of a break. To ease us back into our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 233 on The List, submitted by platenworm.

And, to try something a bit different in terms of the format of these spotlight posts, this Fall season I’m going to try a thing I’m tentatively calling (but will spare y’all by keeping it out of the blog post titles) ‘Four Facts Fall’, where I’ll attempt to keep the spotlight down to – you guessed it – four facts, one of which may or may not be directly about the album being spotlit.[1] Of course, knowing me, I’ll likely get all pumped up about an album/artist and want to include way more than four facts, so the spotlights will likely be more like four sentences that may or may not be way too long. (Perhaps it should be ‘Fourteen Facts…’? Or ‘Forty Facts…’? …’Four Hundred Facts’?!!) But I like facts, you like facts, more facts are good. Also, time doesn’t exist so this format likely will go beyond Winter Solstice. But I digress.

This album features the duo of the wildly prolific virtuoso piano improviser and composer Satoko Fujii and renowned jazz drummer and artist Ramon Lopez. The brilliant, peaceful, contemplative music they coax out of their instruments together sounds like they’ve played together for ages, and yet they had only played together once before recording this. Nearly the entire album was improvised, making its title absolutely apt – “confluence” comes from the late Latin confluentia, itself from the classical Latin verb confluere, where the prefix con– means “together” and fluere “to flow”. The word is typically used when describing where two rivers meet, which is a very lovely metaphor for this collaboration between Fujii and Lopez.

  1. For those of you who had seen the toot, I originally wanted these set up like an Airplane Facts With Max sort of thing where I’d nonsensically but seamlessly jump from facts about the album being spotlit to an incredibly unrelated random fact about music sourced from Fedizens or elsewhere. But, having now written and prescheduled a few of these spotlights, I haven’t even come close to pulling such a thing off, and have edited such attempts out. Also, that toot didn’t get any bites from people wanting to share their infodumping skills, so I deleted the toot (what toot?) and I’ll just see what happens. ↩︎

The cover art looks either like a black and white photo taken from within a dark building where the outside can only barely be seen through cracks in the (wooden?) wall, or a black a white photo with black shapes painted over top, nearly covering all of the photo. The album title is in a white/cream font in the top right corner, with Fujii's name in yellow/orange font underneath but set to the right, and Lopez's name in blue underneath that but set to the left.

Ahhh, there's new Jo Quail! I had wishlisted this when it went up for preorder and then totally missed the release. First track at least sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a Jim Jarmusch or Darren Aronofsky film, listening to rest now...

Old music, new visuals! 🙈

Full video on #peertube : https://makertube.net/w/5nufTbCmBA3GWWbFJoK7Wi

I had this idea about doing a little #musicvideo for "2x2 (vocal version)", which came out last year on @dontlookbackrecords as part of "2x2x2"... so I asked Fei Nie whether she could not only perform with me but also shoot it with her camera! 🎥
We co-directed it and I took care of the editing. ✂️The starting point for the video was to document the minimalist staging and light design from the live shows last year, but then we got carried away by ideas that happened on the spot...💡

So yeah imagine a music video, but slooooooooooooooow. As in, really slow 🐌

Where's the new music I hear you ask?
Well, thank you for asking!
It is coming...💨
soon!

The Lark Unending by David Donohoe. Special Guest, Dennis McNulty.

National Concert Hall, Tuesday, November 4 at 08:30 PM GMT

The Lark Unending’ by David Donohoe.

Performed by David Donohoe (electronics), Susan Geaney (flutes) & David Lacey (percussion)

with special guest Dennis McNulty

David Donohoe presents ‘The Lark Unending’, a new composition based on field-recordings of breeding Skylarks made earlier this year in the Glenasmole valley.

Composed for trio of Susan Geaney (flutes), David Lacey (percussion) and David Donohoe (electronics), the performers will be embedded in and responding to a diffusion soundscape originating from the songs of individual Skylarks, creating an intensely immersive, emotional and physical experience utilising a frequency spectrum from deep bass to glistening highs.

The Skylark’s song feels like liquid gold, shimmering to ground from above, the bird invisible against the sky. Closer listening reveals a dense and complex structure of sequential phrasing, repetition and mimicry, individual birds having their own vocabularies of phrases & rhythms from which they extemporise.

With Skylark numbers in significant decline through habitat loss, intensive farming practices, plantation forestry & exhaustion of bog vitality, ‘The Lark Unending’ is offered as both a monument to this particular time of catastrophic ecological decline and a call of hopeful defiance – a rallying call for us to engage actively with the biodiversity crisis.
