So, where are all the #CIEP members?
I've heard that there's a community on Discord, but I don't want to go there, so it would be good to have one on here â sort of following on from the CIEP forums.

My big excitement for the day: new CMoS just dropped (I also have 14 and 17). #geek #nerd #words #copyeditor #proofreader #CMoS #ChicagoManualofStyle
An achievement I'm proud of: In Nov 2021, GJ Kemp reached out for a copyedit, my first word-of-mouth client. Thanks to Francesca Catlow for the referral. 350,000+ edited words later, we're still working together! The snowball started here. đ
Here's a quick tip I slipped to my writing craft group a few weeks ago.
Thought I'd share it with you.
Every day's a school day.
Go get 'em, tiger. đ
Send it on to anyone who might find this useful/interesting! đ¤

... where's the #copyeditor now...
Yesterday I gave a presentation about becoming a freelance copyeditor to a group of 7th to 9th graders. This was through a partnership between Vermont Works for Women and the Vermont Virtual Learning CoopÂerÂaÂtive.
Here's one of my slides that covers the pros and cons of the profession.
Iâm now a #copyeditor for J #CaDS Journal of Corpus-assisted Discourse Studies! Very happy to be part of such a great team 𼰠Any advice from people with experience in copyediting?
Info-Tech Research Group, an #IT #analyst firm, is looking for a #copyeditor. The position is full-time remote. Go here to get details and to apply: https://linkedin.com/jobs/view/3736698317/ . Production manager there says compensation can be adjusted for any senior candidates who are a good fit. #Bookstodon
I've added some new commission options to my Ko-fi, including beta reading, proofreading, copy-editing, page layout, and moodboard creation.
Please consider checking them out if you're interested, or just share this post to help me spread the word!
One thing that I hate about hustle culture is the idea that if you love your job, it's not work. I love editing, but I can only put in so many hours before I'm wiped.
I thought I would know what I want to be when I grow up by now. Magic 8 Ball points to...copyeditor?
My best skills are reading, correcting other people's errors, and social justice. Where can I get a job doing all those things?
Real pig-in-shit moment as a #copyeditor and #proofreader coming up with a coherent set of style choices for replacing textual brackets with other punctuation, so that my decisions become intelligible to the author and to other editors
This is specific to works that use authorâdate citation styles, to reserve brackets for the citations and for supplementary info, e.g. "World War II (1939â1945)"
But it's also just refreshing for me to codify a set of choices that was previously intuitive to me. I've learned grammar post-hoc to understand why certain choices feel 'right' or 'wrong', and I still often don't know certain linguistic terms; I'm a Gestalt editor who reads holistically for meaning
I swear to god, I feel at my most neurodivergent when I'm going deep on semantics
it embarrasses me to suspect that other people don't think so hard about "what words mean"
they probably think I'm splitting hairs, but to me, it's vital to express myself absolutely precisely
There are ways to get quality #editing on a minimal budget. You just have to be willing to put in the time and effort, and think outside the box. One such way is to use your other skills as a form of payment. Bring back bartering! (Serious, peeps. I'm currently looking for a #coverdesigner and a #copyeditor myself, and am definitely open to the idea of bartering.) #writingCommunity #writinglife #writingtips https://medium.com/@JudyLMohr/11-tips-for-getting-quality-editing-on-a-minimal-budget-e2ed78d5d057
I think I use the dictionary most often to look up if a word is a preposition, even if I could use 1/5 of my brain and figure it out myself.
And then I look up if follow-up is hyphenated as a noun. (It is.)
Every year the time comes for updating the Style Guide and I have my personal bugaboos.
Year 1: Accurate use of racial terms and capitalizing Black
Year 2: Removing men/women from the text and replacing with âpatientsâ or âassigned male/female at birthâ
Year 3: Updating use of age terms and removing things like âelderlyâ from our text
I love being a #copyeditor
