Editing catch of the day:

A reference to Chico in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is now a reference to Chico in "A Fistful of Dollars". A good reminder of the always-look-it-up principle

Here in England, we spell behavior 'behaviour'. If MS Word can't get this simple thing right when I've chosen to use English (UK) settings, then why on Earth would I want any grammar checking or AI 'help'? How would you know if its recommendations are 'right'? #proofreading #writing #English(UK)

Spelling and Vocabulary for the Secretary
by Long, Tillett, and Woodbridge
for Katharine Gibbs School, New York

----------------------
After I became a proofreader, my dad gave me this reference book, which belonged to my grandmother who I never met. She traveled to New York to attend Katharine Gibbs School in the 1930s and later became a chief administrator at Duke Hospital.

She must have used this book quite often. It is worn and filled with her handwritten notes. I wish I could have connected with her as a fellow word nerd.

• Find the 2nd sentence.
• Post the sentence in a toot with the hashtag and write the rules as a comment to it.
• Don't look for your favorite, coolest or wittiest book. Go for the closest.

That feeling when ...

... you get more wonderful testimonials about your editing and professional work.

I'm going to share two testimonials here, anonymously, but of course, if said people want to 'own up' to their words, be my guest!

Number One:

Peter is a brilliant editor with great instincts and real heart. He cares deeply not only about the material he works on, but also about the audience who will read it. He’s a passionate advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, and his commitment to inclusion and authenticity shines through in everything he does. Truly one of those people who make any project (and team) better.

Number Two:

Peter is a DEI specialist who makes inclusion a priority, not an afterthought. His knowledge and expertise on the subject have helped raise awareness across the project team and resulted in a richer, more inclusive publication.

Thank you so much to those of you who've sent me these testimonials (and those I haven't shared yet). It means so much.

***

I'm Peter (he/him), a dedicated editor, proofreader and consultant focusing on sensitive and inclusive editorial work for charities, NGOs, not-for-profits and educational institutions. Get in contact with me at peter@peterjfullagar.co.uk

In solidarity.

Sometimes, you can’t even give editing or proofreading away for free!

Almost two weeks ago, I pointed out two typos on an activist group post via message. Got a reply saying thanks.

Still not amended.
What kind of message does this send?

Work update:
I feel in a state of flux at the moment. Yes, there's some work in English language teaching publishing, but increasingly I feel I want to move out of that space.

I find that I much prefer editing and proofreading now, and I've been looking into work outside of ELT – namely into charities, NGOs and public bodies, particularly those relating to #LGBTQIA representation and issues, but not exclusively.

I've written to some charities, but have not had much luck with responses. Perhaps they outsource their editing and proofreading to consultancies. So I've been reaching out to consultancies who specialise in providing editing and proofreading to public bodies, governments and charities, with some success in replies.

So, if anyone knows anyone who might be able to help ... please do get in touch.

Omgs bookshop dot org, DO BETTER!

At first I thought there was some kind of joke, that somebody had written a parody book about Salman, or maybe he himself had written a funny book.

Nope!

For a "bookshop", this seems like a huge #proofreading gaffe!

A cropped screenshot from an email I got today listing some authors, and Salman Rushdie's name is spelled like the fish, salmon. 🙄

Power users of pronunciation dictionaries, I have a pretty specific situation here. The person I'm proofing for uses actual space characters rather than tabs at the beginnings of his paragraphs, this results in having runs reported by text analyzer every time I get to a new paragraph. Having JAWS speak character count works, but this usually means seeing the space count at the beginning of each paragraph twice unless I turn off indentation indication. Yet, I need indentation indication to report justification levels such as centered or whether or not text is justified. I mark the ends of my sentences with one space. He marks them with two. is there a way I can make one dictionary entry that will allow me to set a sound to play when there are two spaces after colons or other other punctuation marks that normally end sentences? Or do I have to create an entry for every one of these? Just creating one for two spaces doesn't work because it gets triggered when two or more spaces in a row are encountered, so the three spaces my client uses for paragraph starters gets indicated... and we're back to square one. Good grief, evening #audiobooks need #proofreading! 😱

PS. I'm only one chapter into Kaliane Bradleys 2024 debut novel, #TheMinistryOfTime, and I'm already loving it. ❤️

PPS. For anyone who's read/listened to it and would like more background into the principal character Graham Gore's ill-fated Franklin expedition in search of the Arctic Northwest Passage, I recommend Erebus: The Story of a Ship by Michael Palin. I loved his narration of the audiobook version. And don't worry, this is not a spoiler, as the expedition and its outcome are revealed in Chapter One! 😉

Proofing an annual report this morning, and I came across a page heading with two (count em!) exclamation points.

Ugh

Seriously, people, this is an annual report, not a middle-school book report. 😳

It is open source and you can run your own instance easily.
