Great initiative by the residents in Ardkeen and along Williamstown Road and the Dunmore Road. We need our local government to provide proper segregated cycle paths in order to improve safety and reduce traffic by giving people the option to cycle safely instead of driving!

Just before Leer we went over a bridge with a busy road and here we took the cycle-path. But it's very narrow.

On the cycle-path over a bridge. This is supposedly suitable for bidirectional cycling, but it'll be awkward if someone comes the other way.

More bridge. Van on the road. Narrow cycle-path. Sign telling people to wait if the bells are ringing and lights are flashing because the bridge is about to open.

On the way back there's someone walking. Yes, this is a shared use bidirectional path, and MUCH too narrow. Overtaking this woman was really awkward. We had to slow right down to walking pace.

This morning's dog walk was through snow. There was quite a lot of the white stuff around, but

It still amazes me how efficiently the heat pump extracts heat from obviously cold outdoor air to make our home warm. I mean that both in terms of rapidly heating us up, and in that it does not use much electricity.

Three photos of the new cycle-path. This is rather nice. It's wide, smooth concrete. It's just a shame that at the end it ends a bit abruptly. In time this will link up at both ends properly and cyclists will have a new efficient route over the 30 km distance from Assen to Groningen. It's been taking a while, but more than half of it is complete now.

Velomobiles going along the new cyclepath. It's about 5 m wide, very smooth and really quite excellent. This is what we want ! At this point we pass another petrol station and again we don't buy any (I've not personally bought any type of fuel for a car since 2018).

The new cycle-path continues. As you can see, it's straight, smooth, efficient. The old path on the other side of the motorway worked OK, but it was not like this.

And this is where the new concrete cycle-path ends. We're ejected onto an old tiled path by a sort of a harbour. This leads to the bridge visible in the photo where we can pick up another part of the "new" route which has been in use for a few years already.

A few photos from today's recreational Assenliggers bike ride. In total I rode 81 km today, it was a bit warmer than last week. The sun even came out for a bit.
There were four of us today, @TheoZw (who led us this week), @twilwel, Gert and myself.

This traffic light defaults to green for bicycles. Excellent.

Are we in the Netherlands ? The photo shows a cyclepath alongside a canal, with velomobiles on the cyclepath and a traditional windmill on the other side of the canal. Looks very Dutch.

I could really do with a break from this damp and misty weather. It's not especially cold right now, around freezing point, but it's somehow piercing. A cold that you feel despite a decent jacket.

Anyway, more parcels of bike parts began their journeys to customers with a ride on my bike today. Sadly I've decided to stop accepting orders from the USA until we know what's going on with the wild man and his tariffs. When the UK changed its rules for imports it ended up costing me a lot of money (due to parcels sent early enough that they shouldn't have been affected not being delivered and instead being returned broken many months later) and I don't want to risk repeating that experience with the US.

My bicycle parked on a Dutch cycle-path with parcels stacked on top. Cyclists heading in both directions past me. Cars on the other side of the wide verge, which also serves as cycle parking for the bus stop.

Parcel deliveries this week. We've had a lot of fog this week. Freezing fog, even, as it's been below zero a lot of the time. Not especially nice weather to be out and about, tbh, but there you are. Anyway, it's safe for me to continue to cycle with my parcels of bicycle parts because the cycle-paths keep the cars away from me.

These days, however, it is carrying water (i.e. doing its job) most months except in summer. Here is #photograph of the #channel running alongside a segregated #Footpath and #Cyclepath. Incidentally, this is almost exactly where, three months ago, I ran into a dog’s lead as the owners were walking on the footpath and the dog was on the grass verge on the right.

Segregated cycle and foot paths and flood relief channel.

A couple of photos from earlier this week when I went out for an extra ride for exercise. This maintenance vehicle went no faster than 33 km/h, but it was impossible to overtake it safely because there was always someone coming in the opposite direction, or a blind corner, or a junction... So I followed it for a while before it turned off in a different direction.
Luckily, this one is electrically powered so there was no stinky exhaust. If it was one of the older models I'd have found a different route instead of breathing all the fumes.

Maintenance vehicle still on the cycle-path ahead of me. Again, I sort of could pass it, but there's a blind corner so I stay behind. Going a little slower for a short distance is never really a problem, of course.

Which sociopath at #Sheffield City Council decided that brick block paving was a good choice for the Trans-Pennine national #cyclepath? It's uncomfortable to ride on without full suspension, expensive to lay (presumably) & today even peds couldn't walk down the unbroken sheet of ice.

If I succumb to my head trauma, I want them told! 🧊☠️🚲

Lastly, this is the #bridge over the #RiverExe, which is a sign that my home is a mere 5 km away. A sight that is always welcome. The bridge is old but it a #cyclepath was constructed as an extension to it on the far side, which blends in very nicely with the existing #masonry.
