Decades later, The Darkness's debut album, 'Permission To Land', still sounds fantastic to my ears and remains one of the best debut albums by any band, in my humble opinion. While you can detect influences from several bands, particularly Queen, in their soundscape β€” from Justin Hawkins' soaring vocals to his brother Dan Hawkins's masterful guitar work that harmonises symbiotically with Justin's β€” they have ultimately crafted a unique sound distinct from their contemporaries. Moreover, their British wit and humour in some of their lyrics add to their charm and fun, at least for me, though I can understand why some might dismiss them as not being "serious" artists. However, I strongly disagree when you consider their musicianship alone! In between the AC/DC-like opener "Black Shuck" and the closing epic ballad "Holding My Own", this album (with a memorable cover artwork too) is a near-perfect collection of rock 'n' roll brilliance! And oh boy, they are even better live!
