To a certain degree, I genuinely believe that owning Miles Davis's seminal album, 'Kind Of Blue', has become something of a cliché in any vinyl collection. Yeah, it is one of those albums. Yet, there is a reason why it is hailed by many as the greatest jazz album of all time, and one of the greatest albums across genres. Its direct and indirect influence has shaped generations of musicians from various musical traditions, also due in part to the remarkable ensemble Davis assembled at the time, featuring legends such as John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb, each contributing extraordinary musicianship. The best way to describe the essence of Davis's early works, particularly 'Kind Of Blue', is as something profoundly soothing, almost meditative, yet undeniably sophisticated with its modal harmonies. Ultimately, I am delighted to finally have this album in my vinyl collection (I only got it a few weeks ago), alongside my copy of 'Bitches Brew' from his electric period which might be my favourite Miles Davis album.

'Off The Wall' is Michael Jackson's fifth studio album and the inaugural installment in the iconic trilogy produced by Quincy Jones. Whilst I hold deep admiration for Jackson's extraordinary talents as a singer and performer — his unique dance abilities are truly unparalleled — I must confess that I have always felt a distinct indifference towards much of his later work in the final decades of his career. However, 'Off the Wall', his breakthrough album that captures the essence of the late 1970s disco era, is a dazzling exception. The album’s infectious energy is irresistible, effortlessly compelling one to let loose on the dancefloor. Indeed, I would go so far as to suggest that it may well be my favourite of his works. Although it is undoubtedly the result of a collaborative effort, with a veritable army of musicians and sound engineers supporting Jackson’s artistic vision, the album is remarkably close to perfection. The opening quintet of tracks— ‘Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough’, ‘Rock With You’, ‘Workin’ Day And Night’, ‘Get On The Floor’, and the title track — alone justifies its iconic status, before the listener is further spoiled by the touching ballad "She's Out Of My Life" and the funky closer "Burn This Disco Out". Now, if I were to be especially discerning, I would say the front cover is my least favourite aspect of the album, as his haircut is not depicted at its best here.

The uplifting anthem "Live Forever" was Oasis's third single, released shortly before their iconic debut album, 'Definitely Maybe', at the end of August in 1994. Over the decades, the song has become deeply ingrained in British culture and is also widely recognised beyond the UK. Given their deep admiration for The Beatles, it is no surprise that the single's cover artwork features a photograph of John Lennon's childhood home at 251 Menlove Avenue in Liverpool. Interestingly, exactly thirty years earlier to the day, The Beatles walked on the zebra crossing on Abbey Road for the album cover photoshoot. This somewhat rare 12-inch edition of the song is something I cherish in my vinyl collection due to the significance of its release date and lyrics.

Stevie Wonder's sixteenth studio album, 'Innervisions', stands as a testament to the prodigious multi-instrumentalist's profound talent and artistic evolution during his classic period in the '70s. This album marks a significant maturation in Wonder's oeuvre, delving into more sophisticated and socially conscious themes whilst still encompassing love songs. Alongside contemporaries such as Curtis Mayfield, it can be argued that the album laid the groundwork for the progression of soul (no pun intended) and R&B throughout the '70s. From the powerful "Higher Ground" and "Golden Lady", to the evocative "Living For The City" and "All Love Is Fair", 'Innervisions' is an album of compelling brilliance that is difficult to set aside in my opinion. Oh, and remarkably, most, if not all, of the instruments were played by Wonder himself on this record (again)!

'Private Space' is the third studio album by the retro-soul band Durand Jones & The Indications. Once again, they masterfully transport listeners into a world where the sensual soul and R&B sounds of the '70s and '80s, sometimes accompanied by funky disco fever for the dancefloor, never ceased to exist, as if time stood still. The album clearly showcases their influences, and the modern production is both tasteful and precise, ultimately creating an entrancing listening experience. Highlights from this album include "Withchoo", "Love Will Work It Out", "Sea Of Love", "Reach Out" and "I Can See" to name a few. Frankly, I am delighted to have discovered this band a while back, as they have yet to produce a disappointing album. If you are in the mood for this type of music, this album (and the rest of their work) is a must-listen.

Terence Trent d'Arby's debut album stands as a formidable introduction (no pun intended) to a criminally underrated multi-instrumentalist who easily channels those James Brown and Prince energies. Known as Sananda Maitreya since 2001, he released this album in the late '80s, masterfully blending funk, R&B, rock, soul, and pop into a cohesive and polished production, which yielded several timeless tracks such as "Wishing Well", "Sign Your Name" and "Dance Little Sister". Although his debut does not surpass the brilliance of his 1993 release 'Symphony Or Damn', which remains my favourite from the Terence Trent d'Arby era, it undeniably laid the groundwork for his future, more daringly experimental endeavors. Regrettably, both the music industry and mainstream media seem to have largely forgotten him, yet he still retains a loyal fan base. His continued output of high-quality, intriguing music demonstrates his immense talent, and I still eagerly await the day he returns to the limelight, reclaiming the prominence he once enjoyed during his prime years. He is an artist of extraordinary caliber, deserving of far greater recognition for his contributions to music, in my opinion.

When you blend hard funk rock and psychedelic soul with Jimi Hendrix embellishments, you get 'Maggot Brain' — the last album with the original lineup. Whatever substances George Clinton and the gang indulged in during the making of 'Maggot Brain', they certainly helped capture lightning in a bottle with this seminal album. Funky, loud, dark, spacey, and trance-inducing; it is definitely an album that should be experienced from start to finish in one sitting for the best listening experience. Highlights include the epic title track, "Wars Of Armageddon", "Super Stupid", "Hit And Quit It", "You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks", and "Can You Get To That". It is quite likely that if Jimi Hendrix were still alive, he would have composed something similar to 'Maggot Brain' at some point in the early '70s. His "fingerprints" are all over this album, thanks to Eddie Hazel. And oh man, Hazel's guitar solos on the title track are spellbinding!

Decades later, The Darkness's debut album, 'Permission To Land', still sounds fantastic to my ears and remains one of the best debut albums by any band, in my humble opinion. While you can detect influences from several bands, particularly Queen, in their soundscape — from Justin Hawkins' soaring vocals to his brother Dan Hawkins's masterful guitar work that harmonises symbiotically with Justin's — they have ultimately crafted a unique sound distinct from their contemporaries. Moreover, their British wit and humour in some of their lyrics add to their charm and fun, at least for me, though I can understand why some might dismiss them as not being "serious" artists. However, I strongly disagree when you consider their musicianship alone! In between the AC/DC-like opener "Black Shuck" and the closing epic ballad "Holding My Own", this album (with a memorable cover artwork too) is a near-perfect collection of rock 'n' roll brilliance! And oh boy, they are even better live!

Naturally, I wasn't born when AC/DC's early groundbreaking albums, like 'Let There Be Rock' or 'Back In Black', were released, so I couldn't experience them nor the atmosphere around them firsthand when they were all "new". However, for my generation, I am delighted to have Airbourne's debut album, 'Runnin' Wild', as my own 'Back In Black'. Compared to other solid AC/DC imitators, these guys have that elusive X-factor. Therefore, for me, they are the logical successors to AC/DC to receive and hold their torch to this day — and believe it or not, they actually have their own sound on top of the unbeaten AC/DC formula. When I first heard this album many years ago, I was blown away by how "perfect" and "refreshing" it sounded throughout (and still does today) – from the guitar tone to the fiery, memorable riffs – and I've been an avid fan of Airbourne ever since (I saw them live a few times and even got to meet the 'Runnin' Wild' lineup in person in Glasgow years ago)! No frills, just pure rock 'n' roll thrills!

Jamiroquai's sixth album, 'Dynamite', released in 2005, continued their vibrant blend of acid jazz and funk, with pop and electronic embellishments, showcasing the band's signature sound heavily inspired by '70s soul, R&B, and disco music. Whilst the album may not break new ground like some of their earlier works, such as 'Travelling Without Moving', it certainly embodies the adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" for the most part. As expected from a Jamiroquai album, 'Dynamite' exudes infectious, funky, and groovy dancefloor energy, with highly polished production (perhaps a bit too polished at times?), making it still stand out in their discography, in my opinion. Tracks like the title track, "Feels Just Like It Should", "Time Won't Wait", "(Don't) Give Hate A Chance", and "Seven Days in Sunny June", to name a few, captivate the listener with catchy grooves and highlight Jay Kay's prowess as a frontman and vocalist, channelling a Stevie Wonder flair. Frankly, my only true criticism of 'Dynamite' is that it does suffer from the infamous "loudness war" at times, resulting in an overly compressed sound with little room for the music to "breathe", compared to their previous albums. Nevertheless, some tracks are undeniably classic bangers that compel you to dance uncontrollably, thus I may forgive it for that!
