📢 New blogpost!

🔓 Reusing data: can we bridge the distance between data consumers and producers? @kathleengregory, Femmy Admiral, Pascal Flohr, @parrhesiastic, @sarahlippincott & Thed van Leeuwen argue that it is vital to also include the consumer perspective when discussing the development of open research data.

Question regarding #dataReuse and #datasharing:

With my students, I scraped tweets on different topics relating to time frames up to October 2022. I am still making some of those data sets available for #teaching purposes and wonder if that's officially allowed, given the changes in Twitter/X's recent terms of use. I would appreciate some clarifications as I cannot find precise up-to-date information online. Most information I find still relates to the pre-Musk period and seems outdated.

Dear #RDM community, when it comes to #datareuse for a totally different domain and purpose, I once heard this anecdote:

🏞️ For some time, a hotel took for their flyer yearly a photo of the building, with mountains and a glacier in the background. Because the photos were always taken from the same position, researchers could use this photo series for their research on the glacier.

My question now: Does anyone know this anecdote, and — even better — has a (scientific) reference for it? 😅 Thx!

🔎 How can #mtDNA research benefit from #DataReuse? Our latest blog post highlights a paper showcasing how #DataSharing is key for advancing clinical and genomic research. On this occasion, Ed Reznik's team at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center reused data from 3 studies stored at the EGA.

Highly recommended read - make sure to take a minute and file through @mjgiarlo's thread (linked below 👇🏽) for a #code4lib member perspective on the recent court case of OCLC v. Anna's Archive ...

And we couldn't agree more, this is just such a waste of energy, time, and resources - and to what end? To antagonise / alienate OCLC's customer base even more?

This is exactly why we are working hard to establish an equitable, fully open alternative to #OAbooks metadata creation and dissemination - with all metadata records released under a #CC0 public domain dedication (as they should!) #MARC #ONIX #KBART #MetadataMatters #DataReuse #Right2Remix

Today, @tabea from our team presented "From Data Creator to Data Reuser: Distance Matters", a new paper by Christine Borgman and Paul Groth in our local Journal Club. There's more to consider than just the FAIR principles when it comes to enable (research) data reuse. Recommended reading!

Seeking help! Research data by/about/related to art history - who created it, who has it, who (re-)uses it? We only know so little! Yes, there's arthistoricum.net/. Yes, there are image metadata in LIDO XML. But: Who makes use of them for new research? Yes, there were a number of PhD theses on CIDOC CRM. Where's the data? Was the schema adopted? Has data been (re-)used, even outside art history? Please share your knowledge! #DigitalArtHistory #ResearchData #DataReuse #FAIRData

This preprint observes a citation advantage of papers reusing more than one dataset, based on publications reusing ICPSR datasets:
arxiv.org/abs/2402.05024

"Papers that used more than one dataset garnered 22%, 15%, and 15% more citations over 3, 5, and 10 years relative to papers that used a single dataset." The effect is higher for datasets that are rarely used in combination.
