Texans are demanding their local governments push pause on #DataCenters. Can they?

Texans from Waco to Harlingen are raising concerns over how much energy and water data centers are poised to use. Local officials, some enticed by a tax boon, say they have little power to stop the rush.

By Berenice Garcia and Sam Shaw, Feb. 13, 2026

Excerpt: "In many of these places, Texans are demanding local elected officials intervene.

"The small town of Lacy Lakeview north of Waco is partnering with the developer #Infrakey on a proposed $10 billion data center, drawing an organized opposition campaign from rural neighbors around the 520-acre site.

"Since November, the opposition has circulated a petition with some 3,000 signatures, created a Facebook group and website and held regular strategy meetings that have been attended by political leaders such as state Rep. Pat Curry, R-Waco.

"Rena Schroeder, a Republican candidate for Texas Senate District 22, has also made appearances at the meetings, promoting herself as the voice for rural data center opponents.

"Similar grassroots resistance efforts are taking place across the state. "

US #datacenters face slew of problems amid grassroots #protests against #AI

New constructions delayed or cancelled, raising questions about US’s ability to expand infrastructure to support boom

Tom Perkins
Tue 24 Feb 2026 10.00 EST

"Cancellations and delays of new US datacenters have increased as the #ArtificialIntelligence boom runs up against a slate of issues, including supply chain snags, energy shortages and tariff-induced restraints.

"Grassroots opposition from local communities has also derailed some plans, and some investors have grown wary of datacenters amid fears of an #AIBubble.

"Dozens of plans for datacenters were killed or delayed in December or January, according to reports from the investment research firm MacroEdge and climate news outlet Heatmap. MacroEdge’s research identified 26 cancellations through January – up from one in October."

#Maine lawmakers consider moratorium on new #Datacenters

Maine Public | By Peter McGuire

Excerpt: " 'These data centers as we have seen in other states have impacts for grid resilience, they have impacts for environmental resources, so we just wanted to take a proactive approach and do it unlike any other state has so far,' Sachs said in an interview.

"Data centers house computing networks that process information for applications including artificial intelligence. New centers have been growing across the U.S. and raising concerns about their huge appetite for #electricity and #water.

"Sachs said the proposed council would spend the next year studying the potential impact on electric ratepayers, the environment, power grid and other matters and offer guidelines for building new centers in the future.

"In the meantime, Sachs is proposing a moratorium through mid-2028 on new centers that use more than 20 megawatts of power.

"The plan was opposed by some Republican members of the Legislature's Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee."
