Yesterday we harvested & froze 10 lbs of bok choi. That's on top of all the bok choi we've been eating for the past few weeks.

Bok Choi freezes really well & doesn't need to be blanched first.

I left some of each plant to regrow & if it doesn't stay too hot, we may get another harvest.

I'm hoping there's some of those sunchokes you gave me among all these weeds!
And also hoping they can stand a lot of competition!

26 Jersey Knight asparagus crowns planted! They look weirdly like sea creatures, squid or jellyfish.

Sheet composting didn't work too well here. The plant material decomposed but the paper didn't. Cardboard looked brand new, didn't break down at all.

I've been more optimistic about garden soil than I am with this plot, tbh. Onward!

Happy little hopeful sprouts 🌱

Oregano, thyme came up much faster than expected. Our unheated sunroom makes a tolerable cold frame.

Growing #okra :

What's the minimum number of plants you find worthwhile to grow?

IMO okra is like green beans, in that there's no point in growing it unless you have enough plants to produce enough to cook in batches.

But what's that minimum?

@gardening A day without frost, just right to harvest a handful of the Brussel sprouts. And since we can't garden outdoors right now, we are sprouting indoors.

Ordering asparagus crowns soon, and wondering which variety to choose.

Particularly uncertain about ratio of male to female plants or all male cultivars. Is there a plus having female plants?

Also, purple vs green?

I'm USDA zone 6a, sandy soil heavily amended with compost.

@gardening First and last broccoli of this gardening year. I am surprised we had one at all. We ate it with great delight in a vegetable stir fry.

I planted quite the variety of crucifers this year, mainly sprouting broccoli, Tuscan style kale and Brussel sprouts. I know the sprouting broccoli survives German winters, but will the ordinary broccoli plants survive as well? Hoping for a few more sprout harvests...

I may live to regret this...

The last batch I made of Tomato jam with habanero pepper mellowed quite a bit in the jar and is tasty but not spicy.

With a glut of tomatoes from the garden & more peppers ripening by the day, I've decided to make a 2nd batch. This one with 2 habaneros & 1 jalapeño.

Also, this was by chance, but it looks like a face!

So my spouse planted way too many hot pepper plants. And they've done really well. So I went looking for recipes I could make to use up tomatoes & habanero peppers. So I found a recipe for spicy tomato jam.

Using ONE hot pepper for 5 lbs of tomatoes. LOL.

1 pepper down, several hundred to go!

I'm harvesting dried beans from our pole beans for the first time this year! I'm not sure why I haven't done this before.

(Honestly, until a few years ago, I had no idea shell beans actually came from the same plant as green beans! In my defense, I grew up a city girl.)

It's potato time. You know the drill...

Boil 'em
Mash 'em
Stick 'em in a stew...

We planted 5 varieties this year: purple, pinto, red, & 2 kinds of large white potatoes. The big bin is about half full & I still have more to harvest.

After neglecting the garden for the work around the Hardwick Fair, today was a harvest day.

I froze 20 lbs of tomatoes, picked a ton of bubblegum plums, chopped & cored a bunch of pears to make pear butter, & chopped up the Shiro plums I was holding in the fridge to macerate with sugar for more jam.

Phew!

I still need to blanch & freeze greenbeans.

Everything comes fast & furious in August.
