@glightly If these were #EdgeLaneRoads, drivers would be able to pass as long as there's not a car coming in the other direction. It's a better way to share the space when people on bikes are going both ways and cars who don't like it don't come back if they can avoid it. #InducedDemand 🎉

This #chokePoint is how you combine #trafficCalming and safer #crosswalks, with more cost-effective #EdgeLaneRoads. Instead of #YellowCenterlines forcing people on bikes to "share" with cars, two-way car traffic shares one center lane. The #AdvisoryBikeLanes can be used for two drivers to pass each other, but by default, those spaces are dedicated to people walking and biking. (SW 45th, #SWTFpdx, so many streets need this, not blinking lights and victim-blaming.)

@owen @bobco85 @seabikeblog this @activetowns video has a bit about the middle-of-the-road loading zone in Port Townsend with #EdgeLaneRoads. Too many space-constrained road redesigns are starting from the flawed assumption that they need #YellowCenterlines, which waste most of the space most of the time.

survey says people in #Portland would rather sit on #transit & read than be #drivers. #pdxBikes and #eBikes seem popular, must be time to paint "bus and turn only" on the outside lanes of our #stroads and let's get out of #pdxTraffic + do a solid #ClimateAction, plus besides: #CarsRuinCities #GeometryHatesCars, the future of #transportation is kids biking themselves to school or joining a #BikeBus, make #SchoolStreets, #BusLanes, & #EdgeLaneRoads / #AdvisoryBikeLanes, out of existing car lanes

Defund your DOT, starting with their budget for yellow paint. No freshly paved street should get yellow #CenterLines until it has complete bike and ped infrastructure. Any paint applied now is likely to need grinding to remove it and make #EdgeLaneRoads before the paving is due to be replaced. North American #trafficEngineers are half a century behind the state of the art in traffic safety, and the deaths per #VMT clearly show that. #InducedDemand #VisionZero #ClimateAction #BanCars

If the #AdvisoryBikeLanes #EdgeLaneRoads were actually proportioned like these diagrams, they would be amazing. Not shown: curbs & steel bollards needed every few blocks to keep drivers from ignoring the paint completely. A street in the 26th largest US city needs design elements which get in the way of cars, or it becomes a stroad.
E-mail Scott to say that we should try to put curbs, planters, bollards, or something in the way of speeding cars sometimes.
