Back from a fun weekend of SF #ttrpg games at #NorthStarCon in Sheffield. I ran #TravellerRPG twice, and played #fadingsuns, #ElectricState and #2d20 John Carter of Mars. Proper write up later in the week as I’m ready for a good nap to recover!

I'd heard some pretty poor reviews of The Electric State but decided to give it a watch this evening and thought it was reasonably good. Nothing surprising, nothing innovative, but an enjoyable couple of hours with nice imagery, okay set pieces, and emotional elements enough to make my wife sob a little, although that's an admittedly low bar.

Lukaisin tässä pääsiäislomalla Simon Stålenhagin Liittymiä-kirjan (alkuteos Passagen, eng. Electric State). Löysin taiteilijan samannimisen Netflix-leffan kautta, ja samalla selvisi, että samainen taiteilija on myös Tales from the Loopin takana.

Jos olet katsonut Netflix-leffan, voit varautua hyvin erilaiseen lukukokemukseen. Yhteistä näille teoksille on 1990-luku ja vaihtoehtoinen maailma: sisällissodan jälkeinen Yhdysvallat, jossa ihmiset viettävät liikaa aikaa virtuaalitodellisuudessa. Sotaa on käyty jonkinlaisen tekoälyn ja robotiikan voimin.

Tarinan päähenkilönä on nuori tyttö, joka etsii pikkuveljensä kehoa. Veljen mieli puolestaan on scifianimaatiosta peräisin olevassa robotissa.

Tähän ne yhtäläisyydet sitten jäävätkin.

Kirja on visuaalisesti huikea. Se on aikuisten kuvakirja täynnä upeaa, dystooppista scifitaidetta. Teemoiltaan varsin ajankohtainen teos on synkkä, eikä lukija ole ihan varma, miten sotaan päädyttiin ja miten siinä oikeastaan kävi. Myös tarinan loppu jää sopivan avonaiseksi.

Pitin kuitenkin myös Netflixin leffasta: siinä oli erilainen ote, hieman Becky Chambersin Munkki ja robotti -sarjan taustoja muistuttava näkökulma tiedostavista roboteista, mutta pessimistisemmällä otteella.

Leffan ainut miinus oli aivan lopussa ollut saarnauskohtaus, jossa asioita väännettiin vähän turhankin rautalangasta.

Lämmin suositus kuitenkin kummallekin!

Die beste Filmpromo seit langem die ich auf Youtube gesehen habe. Wollen wir hoffen das der Film ähnlich gut wird. Nach den ganzen Enttäuschungen der letzten Zeit mit #Schneewitchen #Minecraft #Section31 #Electricstate und dutzender anderer Schrottfilme hätten wir echt mal wieder gute Unterhaltung verdient. Hoffentlich kann #TheAmateur die liefern.

I thought #ElectricState was alright. I was expecting it to be total garbage based on the reviews, but it was fine, fun. It didn't really capture the brooding melancholy of Simon Stålenhag's art though, like the excellent Tales from the Loop did, and I certainly would have preferred that 🤷 So disappointing in that it wasted the potential of the source material I guess.

I've been trying to finish the movie #electricstate for three days, just to see if @simonstalenhag 's mind-blowing art is reflected anywhere, and it's been a struggle. How is it possible to have such a rich and mind-blowing source material, 320 millions, and end up making a weak techno-toystory? How many times are they going to tell us the story of the empathetic robot?

I created this #3D scene in my spare time three years ago, with open source software #blender and plug-ins for less than $100, inspired by a drawing from the amazing graphic novel The Electric State by Simon Stålenhag.

It really hurt to watch what #netflix did with this incredible source material and a production budget of $300 million(!). So much wasted potential.

Watched #ElectricState on Netflix. Not a fan.

It would been a decent book to read before the dot com days where the period is set. But in the ChatGPT era, it’s just not there. Same feel as the dragon fly copters in Dune.

Also, too many close up shots. Like way too close for way too much time. It was actually tiring and had to watch it over 2 days.

#ElectricState Read the book this afternoon. Beautiful, slow and surprising. Also watched the movie this evening. Nice to watch, also slow, but not surprising and somewhat popcorn cinema, but not more.

I don't understand why it couldn't have been more true to its source.

Reviews aside, I enjoyed #TheElectricState. Nice to embed oneself in a unique world for a couple of hours with a plot that was predictable but with many enjoyable moments and beautiful views.

Besides, ever since Star Wars, I’ve been a sucker for old, rusty robots. I have a particularly soft spot for the Gonk robot on the Jawa Sandcrawler in New Hope!
