@MakersHour Q1) Many people make resolutions for the new year. Have you made any creative or makery resolutions?
If not a resolution how about a rough plan for 2026?

A1. My theme for the year (resolutions don't resonate very well) is "Connect and Sustain" . Part of that is to stay connected to maker communities by showing up for Makers Hour and attending online craft alongs.

I want to finish my newsboy cap and do more English Paper Piecing. #englishpaperpiecing

#MakersHour

A small project quilt sandwich to be used for a hand sized pouch, with various print fabric hexagons pieced on one side quilted along the hexagon sides through the layers to the backing panel. The project is folded to show both sides and the un-trimmed central padding layer.

The through-line for my year was, as much as anything, the path of a needle and thread. If you search my posts in #embroidery or #millinery or #englishpaperpiecing, you'll see. And it was a learning and sharing experience.

In the style of an Exocolonist memory card of the yellow suit (social and creativity), the title is NEEDLECRAFT, with a card value 5, and a central image combining two projects, a hexagonally pieced and quilted tool pouch, and an embroidered apron front with a young woman cooking at a stove derived from a 1950s cookbook image by Betty Betz. The card text shows a gem and the words "Embellish, construct, mend."

Finally brave enough to start thread-basting my Liberty fabrics for an (as of yet) unknown EPP hexagon project. This fabric feels simply amazing!

On the left: a collection of fabric covered hexagons in a glass bowl.
On the right: small fabric squares in a variety of fabrics.

I had some leftover Kaffe Fassett fabric and with the rain storms these past weeks, I have enjoyed paper piecing these scraps into usable items for a quick project.

Small EPP bag, outside hand stitched, bag fabrication on my sewing machine, now all that's left is to wrap this carefully and I will post it as a birthday gift for my niece.

I have a new quilt hoop. Finally, no more annoying falling apart in the middle of quilting! (Yes, yes - I used my too small embroidery hoops until now.)
I've been eyeing up a hoop like this for a long time and was very skeptical – but I really like it. Lightweight, securely hooped fabric.

Tiny Sewing Kit complete. Thanks to Jessica Alexandrakis' book Quilting On The Go for the pattern.

Variously worked on the commute bus and in the living room after dinner while being read to from a library book.

Five inches / twelve centimeters of inside binding to do, then a patch to hold the magnetic closure, and the Tiny Sewing Kit will be ready.

#quilting #englishpaperpiecing

A hexagonally pieced fabric pouch with red edge binding and a vinyl cased magnet temporarily resting on the outside of the flap covering an inside pocket. A mirror reflection shows the back side. With the top flap open, it would be about hand-sized.

Pinning the double fold binding for the pocket edge of the Tiny Sewing Kit after puzzling with the instructions for a while. The fold will conceal the stitch line and the inside will be hidden inside the pocket.

The longer perimeter binding is supposed to be machine stitched on the first edge to attach the binding and anchor the pocket, then folded around and whipstitched on the lining side. We'll see.

#quilting #epp #englishpaperpiecing

An unfolded strip of double-fold red bias binding pinned across a short straight end edge of the hexagonally pieced top of the Tiny Sewing Kit work in progress.

Quilting complete, setting up the template for trimming the quilted work to size for binding and assembly.

#quilting #englishpaperpiecing

A paper template for trimming the Tiny Sewing Kit to shape for assembly, laid upon the work with the lining side up. A wooden ruler marked in inches and a pencil with shiny rainbow colors also lie on the work.

Tiny Sewing Kit progress, basting of quilting lines almost complete (two edges of the last hex).

#quilting #englishpaperpiecing

On a polished wooden table rests a copy of "Quilting On the Go" open to page 60 with the Tiny Sewing Kit pattern. On the book rests the work in progress, a hexagonally pieced fabric oblong backed with red dots on white. The work is folded to show some of each side.

Evening work on the Tiny Sewing Kit, basting the quilting lines so I can follow them with a shorter, more secure quilting stitch.

#quilting #englishpaperpiecing

Hand pieced and quilted work in progress, folded over to show the hexagon patch pieced top side and single piece lining, with a red hexagonal grid of basting stitches over the lining. Two pink fingers show the small size of the work. A yellow card identifies the "Tiny Sewing Kit".

Deep red thread for quilting at the advice of my resident quilter. I am thinking of outlining each hex along the seam lines. I understand this counts as "stitch in the ditch".

#epp #englishpaperpiecing #quilting

The quilt sandwich folded to show hex patchwork top and red dot pattern lining, with a spool of Mettler quilting thread in deep red. The back cover of the project book, Jessica Alexandrakis' Quilting On The Go, lies underneath, showing a block of text saying "Break Free From Your Sewing Machine".

The pieced top / outside of the Tiny Sewing Kit, together with batting and lining. Next is to stack up the quilt sandwich and pin the layers in place .

#epp #englishpaperpiecing #quilting

An oblong hexagonal patchwork in prints of pink, red, beige, white and green, lying atop a folded piece of quilt batting and a folded length of fabric in red dot print matching one of the patchwork prints. Beyond these are a steam iron, a pile of paper templates, a clear zip closure bag labeled "batting", and a copy of Alexandrakis' book Quilting On The Go.

Nine rows of four. Ready to press and choose a lining fabric, then sandwich with batting for quilting.

#epp #englishpaperpiecing

A pieced hexagonal cell patchwork using print fabric in red, pink, beige, green, and white, with burgundy red and bright yellow accents. To the left is the point of a steam iron. Underneath is a blue terrycloth towel. A yellow card identifies the pattern as "Tiny Sewing Kit" from Alexandrakis' book Quilting On The Go.

In between finishing my large quilt and a new cross stitch project, I've also been making new EPP hexagons: basting random bits of scrap fabric (mostly Kaffe Fassett Collection and/or other Free Spirit designers), I now have about 50 hexagons and more coming.

And thanks to a Zine made by @Kiki, I have found a possible new project: a Hex-Map!

How cool!

The Magic Number Seven of Nine.

Progress report from after #worldcon2025 with two rows to go before I have to stack, line, trim, quilt, and bind.

#epp #englishpaperpiecing

Paper-pieced hexagonal patch tiling with seven jagged rows of four columns in a colorway of pink, red, green, white, and beige, accented with yellow and purple. Jessica Alexandrakis' book Quilting On The Go sits to one side, with a card summarizing the 4x9 top. A needle threader, thread cutter tool sits beside a needle, thread, and safety pin.
