Commonly seen there, in the early 1700s, were a prison ship, a street brawl and noblemen in the broglio, engaging in the less noble side of Venetian politics.

The position of Procuratore di San Marco was one of the highest honorifics of the Republic of Venice, ranking just below the Doge.

Here, a Procuratore di San Marco is depicted seated, in the formal dress of the position. Outside a window, the Redentore church is visible.

They were, as all other high-ranking magistrates of the Republic of Venice, dressed in the traditional toga or vesta.

In this print, we have the church of San Nicolò dei Marinai / San Nicolò di Castello, the ospedale dei marinai, and several other buildings, all demolished in the early 1800s to make room for the Giardini Pubblici.

The Church of Santa Giustina in the Sestiere Castello was once much more ornate than it is today, and the palace of a branch of the Gradenigo family has also known better times.

The square was home to a local traghetto, which was a taxi service in gondolas.

The artist Giovanni Grevembroch lived in the Gradenigo palace in the 1740s and 1750s.

In this print, there's also a series of traffic incidents, involving transport boats and gondolas, with altercations between the rowers.

The Il Gran teatro di Venezia was published by the Venetian printer Domenico Lovisa sometimes in the 1710s or 1720s, in any case after 1715, when the application for a printing permit was made.

The full title is a bit of a mouthful: Il Gran teatro di Venezia ovvero descrizzione esatta di cento delle più insigni prospettive, e di altretante celebri pitture della medesima città, il tutto disegnato, e intagliato eccelentemente da periti artefici, con la narrazione della fondazione delle chiese, monasteri, spedali, isolette, e altri luoghi sì pubblici, come privati ... tomi due in foglio imperiale — In Venezia : per Domenico Lovisa sotto i portici a Rialto.
