I dont have a printer, so I drew my own bit to add to my iNaturalist shirt Ive had for years to wear today to the q&a for a new Ambassador program.

We have been waiting three months for a q&a promised to use about adding GenAI to the site. Still not gotten that promised on, but got this invite to a q&a about becoming an ambassador.

Most users do not want genAI, in fact their blog announcement got so many comments they closed commenting. iNat staff have been obtuse and say they have no plans yet to share about the project so our promised q&a is pointless. But they want a working prototype by the end of the year.

We still do not have guarantee that it will be opt in only, we do not have any transparency for the project as to how it will scrape our data and be traceable, we showed how even using genAI for summarizing the comments about it attributed falsehoods to people who never said what the summary claimed, we showed how it hallucinated ID tips which is what they want to use it to generate…and now, openAI actually admits in their own paper that hallucinations are just a part of genAI, showing this will enshittify the most widely used community science platform.

If you got the invite for the meeting in 40 minutes (noon EST) I ask that you please hop on the meeting and ask these questions and push for them to drop this inane project.

In the end: How can we be an ambassador for GenAI with any good conscious?

@pluralistic still would love to see you do a writeup on this to publicize the issues. I am just a field biologist. I don’t have reach. I don’t have electronic expertise. You do. Most people don’t know this is even happening because it is being shoved under proverbial rugs.

Both I say, I loved his analysis in the thread about expected migration patterns. I think his hopes are pinned on Bluesky, knowing it does not have #LockIn it won't #Enshittify and at some point a major #SeparateInstance or protocol user will pop up proving that concept. I chose Bluesky as primary

Of the four triggers that #ChatGPT says might cause the #AIBubble to collapse more quickly, "a key LLM vendor fails" seems by far the most plausible to me, but I guess we will see.

In terms of the aftermath, I think it is 100% correct about the consolidation. No one will make money on #LLMs until the majority of the competition is gone and the remaining companies have the near-monopoly they need to jack up prices and #enshittify their products.

@Some_Emo_Chick the frustrating part for me on this is that a lot of it is shuffling deck chairs on the titanic. Deezer/Tidal are SSDD just 'not google’. The music industry is now a double edged scam, artists are being fleeced and listeners are being fleeced and Deezer/Tidal participate.

Same could be said for twitter -> bluesky. Sure bluesky is ok now, but it's owned by VC which will #enshittify soon.
