Wiley's new LatAm pilot program (65% APC discount for Colombia) reflects a necessary acknowledgment of inequities in scientific publishing.
While APC models have limitations, every step toward greater accessibility matters. Important to keep working on transforming the system.

"No wall can stand if you just keep going," says our lab leader Michela Di Virgilio (professor at @ChariteBerlin). In order for the #ImmuneSystem to effectively fight off pathogens, B cells need to smash up and reassemble their own #DNA. Di Virgilio and her team are searching for factors controlling this process, which also have crucial implications for our predisposition to #cancer.

I'm all for recognizing ...

...but can we do it without suggesting that the reason a woman would dedicate her life to & was to fill the vacuous space of never having children?

...and maybe also without suggesting some intuitive maternal instinct as the source of her reasoning?

____

@actuallyautistic

An excerpt from the linked article with two sentences highlighted (indicated parenthetically in alt text):

"Because Sukhareva saw autism as rooted in brain development, she never subscribed to the widespread belief that took hold in the 1940s that autism might be caused by ‘refrigerator mothers’ tending to their children in a cold and unemotional way. (highlighted sentence) She never had children of her own but may have had a more intuitive take on mother-child relationships than some male clinicians. (end highlighted sentence)

Like any parent, Sukhareva wrote that her goal was to help the children “stay connected with real life, its tempo and movement.” Given her sensitivity and intuition as a clinician, it’s unfortunate that the research community in the West was not connected with her ideas during her life. “It’s impressive how she managed to achieve all of this,” Manouilenko says. (highlighted sentence)“She didn’t have her own family, so she gave her entire life to studying science and teaching.” (end highlighted sentence)

"If you feel that something really excites you, just go for it," says group leader Daria Bunina.

Her team is researching how epigenetic factors affect cell differentiation. When errors in this process occur, cardiovascular diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders can result.

The #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women in collaboration institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science. On this Day, let’s reiterate this fundamental message: women need science, and science needs women. Only by tapping into all sources of knowledge, all sources of talent, can we unlock the full potential of science, and rise to the challenges of our time. unesco.org/en/days/women-girls #EquityInScience
