About to celebrate the *TRUE* New Year. Counting down to the release of the 2026 FIRST #Robotics game. At #Kickoff in Vancouver, WA with teams from around the #PDX area.

I'm still looking for a solution. I have a fuzzy idea. Please, someone, tell me that I'm wasting my time and there's already a well established solution for this problem.

My idea is that since we have only these 3 degrees of freedom we should use that and somehow add constraints. Or in other words, since the robot can only move on a flat surface then the solution doesn't have to be as comprehensive as 3-dimensional #HandEyeCalibration. Even though the camera looks at a 3d space, the target, if it's fixed in place, or more precisely, the measurements of it make up a 2-dimensional plane in that space. From those measurements we can find the equation of that plane in the camera coordinates. Which will give us the roll and pitch of the camera mount.

However, we don't know the yaw yet. We can't be sure if the camera is looking exactly forward, or at what angle, relative to the robot's kinematics. To find the yaw we would have to match the set of points where the camera saw the target with the points where the robot thought it was at that precise moment. Both sets of points are 2-dimensional. So matching them should be similar to or exactly finding a #homography between the two planes...

Would that homography matrix also hint us about the offset from the robot drivetrain's kinematic center and the camera mount?

🤔

#OMGRobots!

This amazing #firstRobotics team of exceptionally bright kids is confident they can succeed this upcoming 2026 competition season. But they need some help to participate in two tournaments in #Minnesota.

I vouch for this incredible #STEM program called #FIRST that teaches kids not only how to build robots but also innovate, solve problems, manage budget, communicate, and many other skills useful in real life.

This team is run by high school students, their parents, and volunteer mentors with no financial support other than donations. Please consider #giving some help to these awesome kids this #thanksgiving season. Or just BOOST this post, that will help too. THANK YOU!

Hi @in_sympathy,

What would you suggest as the power supply for SBCs like OrangePi or RaspberryPi in a 12V chassis which may fluctuate wildly? It's an #FRC robot. There's a 5V "regulated" source on the chassis but its advertised capacity is only 2A max. So my first thought was a dedicated step down from 12V to 5V. Seeking expert advice. Thank you.

At the #FIRSTRobotics mentor BBQ tonight, my wife introduced herself to a room full of 30+ adults as "a five-year-robot-widow." I feel like maybe I owe her some jewelry or something for putting up with my nonsense.

Needed: #PDX area front-end #developer willing to #volunteer time to teach and mentor a high school FIRST Robotics program.

The Tactics & Strategy wing of the Skyview Robotics program has been working on a data collection and reporting tool and could use some professional guidance. The mentor "stack" currently includes Product, UX Design, Data Analysis, and Dev Ops, but nobody to teach front-end coding.

The crew meets Tuesday and *possibly* Thursday nights starting in the fall. We may be able to flex that for you though. Reach out for more info. Thanks!

#DeanKamen at the MOS

Free with pre-registration.
“A Conversation with Inventor Dean Kamen at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Science, 1 Science Park, Boston, on the Cambridge border. Free with registration. Kamen discusses his and his company’s work on human health innovations, including robotic arms, insulin delivery systems and more. (Kamen may yet be most famous for the Segway mobility device – which, bizarrely, in 2001 drew predictions from Steve Jobs it would be “as significant as the personal computer” and praise for being “revolutionary” from Jeff Bezos.) President of the museum Tim Ritchie joins.”

Both #SkyviewRobotics teams are competing this weekend and... I haven't been up since 4:00am. I'm not at the venue. I'm not working on losing my voice already. For the first time in 10 years, we're competing in a Saturday-Sunday event, not a Friday-Saturday. My brain is actively rejecting the oddity of it all. #FIRSTRobotics #FRC

Our second competition starts tomorrow with load in, set up, and practice matches. The team itterated a few times in the last few weeks on intake design, elevator controls, and automation. And included some last minute prototyping building and finishing a whole new climbing system.

Looking forward to putting on a good show for the home crowd and we'll see if it's good enough to get us into district championships in a week and a half.

FIRST Robotics time again, and this year I'm judging, which requires some pre-work.

The hardest part of judging is the final few rounds, when we're trying to decide to hand the award to the team that walks on water or the team that cures leprosy. Lemme tell you: one of the reasons I keep doing this event is that. The original purpose of FIRST is to inspire the next generation of students (originally the future engineers, but increasingly just good people who know how to be good to other people).

That's a head-fake. The inspiration is circular. These students make me want to stand up and demand the world be better because they fucking deserve better from it.

When I'm tired... Bone-tired, blood-tired, forty-years-in-the-same-flesh-tired... These kids ain't ready to quit yet and all of a sudden, neither am I.

We're mid-season right now, so there's going to be a lot of traffic on that hashtag. If you're in a #STEM field professionally, I also highly recommend getting involved as a mentor with a local #FIRSTRobotics team. firstinspires.org/ways-to-help

My high school child came back from the competition, and I was trying so hard not to laugh....

He was helping out another team who's robot had all kinds of control issues. He said after four hours of mucking with it and removing completely extraneous modules and crud he kinda got it working, and never wanted to look at that code again.

The kicker? It was apparently mostly written with AI :-/
