Just when you thought the job market couldn't get any weirder.

We've all heard of fake jobs and phishing attempts. But did you know there are also fake job seekers who use AI to mask their real identity?

"Scammers can use AI at almost every step in the job application process to hide their true identities. They can generate fake resumes, professional headshots, websites and LinkedIn profiles. Compiled together, AI can help create what looks like the perfect candidate for an open role. Once they're in, these fraudsters can steal company secrets or install malware. [...]

Not great news for genuine freelancers and job seekers who'd love to get remote roles.

@slashdot OK, I get it. I've seen posts by people using bots and scripts (or just ridiculous amounts of labor) to apply for hundreds or sometimes more than a thousand #jobs in just a few weeks. It's a problem.

A problem that exists because of a fucked-up #economy and #labor market. And it's made worse by sometimes really stupid automated/AI #AMS employers use to filter applicants by keywords in application materials. 20% of postings being for #fakejobs sure as hell doesn't help. And LinkedIn's entire existence doesn't help.

Now I guess we can pay extra to have our AI wrangle with employers' #AI and if we "win" (?) maybe a human will see our resume?

"It’s a common feeling when looking at a job listing online: the title is perfect, the pay is right, and the company seems like a solid place to work. But you also wonder if that job is real.

Lots of job seekers have a story about the postings that linger online but never seem to get filled. Those so-called ghost jobs—the roles that companies advertise but have no intention of filling—may account for as much as one in five jobs advertised online.

That’s according to an analysis of internal data by Greenhouse, a hiring platform that examined its clients’ job postings and hiring action over the past year. Greenhouse and LinkedIn recently have begun tagging job listings as verified in response to the rash of ghost listings.

The listings are dispiriting for workers, leading many to distrust potential employers and make a difficult process feel rigged against them."

While some respondents said employers did it to maintain a presence on job boards and build a talent pool, it’s also used to commit psychological warfare: 25% said ghost jobs helped companies gauge how replaceable their employees were, while 23% said it helped make the company appear more stable during a hiring freeze.

After interviewing 1,641 hiring managers, Resume Builder researchers found that 40% of employers posted fake job listings in 2024, and that three in 10 currently had ghost jobs listed. The idea to post them mostly trickled down from HR, followed by senior management and executives, their June 2024 article continued. Though the listings were posted on multiple hiring platforms, the majority of them appeared on LinkedIn and the companies’ websites.

Evidence suggests this trend is taking hold throughout the Bay Area, too.

A collaborative document circulating online reveals a growing list of employers accused of posting ghost jobs. Many of them, it turns out, are tech companies with offices based in California."
