the mill, maker of flour, fount of sustenance in many forms

a four-story wooden building rises above a large water-wheel and stream; it's a water-powered flour mill built in the 1700s, and looks like an artifact from another time

some proud harvests from this last year, and my first good sourdough rye loaves!

happy to finally be #gardening after all these years of dreaming about it

a smiling man holds a collard green up to his torso, showing that it's as big as his chest; he appears proud of this harvest from his gardentwo gorgeous loaves of sourdough rye bread sit atop a dark wooden cutting board; both are powdered with white rye flower, giving extra contrast to the cracks and seams, shallow and deep, that give definition to the surface of the breada cleaned, cut, and re-assembled burdock root sits on a cutting board; it seems rather large, and one can imagine it took a fairly deep hole to dig this outIt's a cabbage! a beautiful cabbage! at home in its rosette of big ol cabbage leaves, in the sun and shade of the vegetable garden. Judging by the hand in the photo, it must be at least softball size.

A couple of smallholdings in Galicia.

Two enclosed long fields, each with a house. In place of a garden each has a cultivated strip with what appears to be a single vegetable crop. An orchard field with dwarf trees runs alongside and there are hilks in the distance. Taken out of a muddy train window

Hi folks! I'm Taylor. I live in the United States, and am connected to New Zealand through family and friends. I haven't yet visited, and am planning to come for a working holiday year as soon as I get the means.

I am big into ecological design, architecture and planning, as well as organic gardening and permaculture. In this phase of my life, I'm mainly looking to travel and find a community (human and otherwise) where I'd feel content to put roots down and plant seeds with the long-term future in mind. I'd love to travel New Zealand, meet other Earth-minded people, and get some work experience alongside you folks.

Happy to connect on here with anyone who's an outdoorsman, a gardener, farmer, traveler, or otherwise nature-minded.

“People in rural communities are getting sick. Cancer is just everywhere,” said Kerri Johannsen, senior director of policy at the Iowa Environmental Council, a non-profit focused on improving the environment that is helping to lead the project. “Every person I talk to knows somebody that has [recently] had a cancer diagnosis,” she said. “It’s just a constant drumbeat. It’s scary.”
