We had a mix of weather and sea conditions for a day of scenic cruising after Punta Arenas. Reaching the point where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans met we got the sort of rough seas we'd been hoping for around Cape Horn. The ship was lurching and twisting and it was immense fun overnight. The following day was calmer, bright and sunny, but as we cruised into the Chilean fjords the clouds came in bringing with them rain for our approach to and time spent admiring the Amalia Glacier. This was our first time seeing a glacier.

A moody, overcast view with thick, grey cloud low down and smothering the scene. We're on water at the end of a fjord looking to land where a wide U-shaped valley reaches down to the shore. The rough, rocky sides of the valley are dotted with dark bushes and vegetation almost as black as the rock they're on. Stretching across the width of the shoreline there is a glacier, dozens of metres high, roughly cracked in vertical jags of blue piercing the white ice. The glacier rises and steps back through the valley and over a small, dark rise it disappears high into the valley until it reaches the cloud that covers its uppermost reaches. A solitary berg of ice is in the flat water ahead of the shallow, pale golden shore that forms a narrow border between the fjord and glacier.

'Cryosphere meltdown' will impact Arctic marine carbon cycles and ecosystems, new study warns

A new study led by Jochen Knies from the iC3 Polar Research Hub has found worrying signs that climate change may be undermining the capacity of #Arctic #fjords to serve as effective #carbon sinks. The findings suggest that the capacity of polar #oceans to remove carbon from the #atmosphere may be reduced as the world continues to heat up.

Knies and his collaborators discovered that rapid changes in the Arctic are transforming vibrant fjord ecosystems like Kongsfjorden in #Svalbard. Published in Communications Earth & Environment, their findings document not only a shift in phytoplankton communities due to melting ice but also a worrying decline in the capacity of these fjords to sequester carbon.

Warmer waters can enhance #phytoplankton growth during sunlit summers, presenting an initial opportunity for increased productivity. However, as the waters become stratified, essential nutrients become harder to access, leading to a double-edged sword: while we may see a rise in phytoplankton #biomass, the efficiency of CarbonCapture could decline.

Across the fjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a stave church from the 11th century.

A local hostel owner did trick us into believing riding a manual bike there would be easy. But in fairness to him, Norwegians do seem to be in incredible shape. Maybe the aggressive uphill trip doesn’t hit the same.
