One project I want to work on When I Have More Time™ is to research the records about my grandfather, John Borland Cumming (1891–1976), who was Australian director of food and petrol rationing between 1942 and 1946 (I think).

He was a model public servant who acted without fear or favour and always properly. My mother used to complain that they never got any special treatment (extra coupons or anything) in spite of the power he had.

JBC was a staunch Presbyterian who lived those Christian values. He never received honours because he was “neither Mick nor Mason” (in his words). He has no entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, which is something I want to remedy.

My attempts at using #Trove and National Archives online to find records have not turned up anything useful. I need to learn how to use these resources effectively.

I will be in #Canberra for a few days in mid August. Is it worth my while going to the National Library or National Archives and asking for help in person?
