The Computer Arts Society 2025 programme continues

Discussion: AI, Creativity and Curation

Panellists: Mario Klingemann & Kalen Iwamoto; Host & Presenter: Geoff Davis

18:00 BST, Tuesday, 17 June 2025

This event is via Zoom only.

What happens when #AI not only generates #art selecting works that reflect established #aesthetics but also invents entirely new genres? Are we seeing novel collaborations, or challenges to #human artistic authenticity? Can a #machine be an #artist The next step may be AI that creates and curates personalised art, delivering memetic content for casual audiences, while using the same processes to create historically-informed works for #galleries or #collectors.

Whether you're an artist, #curator collector, or simply curious, this Zoom-only session offers critical perspectives on integrating AI into #creative practice—while preserving the human values still central to art. At least, for now.

Takashi Murakami's “JAPONISME → Cognitive Revolution: Learning from Hiroshige,” opened at Gagosian New York earlier this month.@ArtNews's Daniel Cassady interviewed Murakami about creating the show, and the act and art of copying. "This, as it turns out, is what growth looks like for Murakami: part excavation, part mutation, and always, a reckoning with the long shadow of art history."

#Museums, #galleries and other cultural organisations can embed support for most of these ideas in their everyday work. Even tiny changes can make a big difference, like examining relationships that staff & volunteers have with maths & working to nudge them in a more positive direction.

The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Los Angeles faces federal funding cuts of $2 million as a result of DOGE's actions. But the team at JANM isn't pulling back any of its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. “Our community is based on diversity, equity is guaranteed to us in the Constitution, and inclusion is what we believe in,” Fujioka told the LA Times. Artist Rashid Johnson has spent his career exploring his anxiety, through paintings, sculptures, photos and more. His most famous work, Anxious Men, is on T-shirts, plates and jewelery, including a necklace worn by Kendall Roy in "Succession." @time spoke to Johnson about his early days, his upcoming solo show at the Guggenheim in New York City, being an influential Black artist, and how he wants his art to be discussed. “I really don’t like the idea that my project, even with all of its diversity and complexity, is opaque,” he says. “I want people to feel agency to talk about it, say what they feel when they see it, and to trust themselves.”

"To Every Orange Tree," a show focused on anti-imperialist and liberation movements by Rhode Island School of Design students, staff and local community members, has been shuttered, four days into its run. This appears to have been done in response to accusations by the StopAntisemitism X account of "promoting violence against Jews and calling for the removal of Israel." Here's more from @ArtNews

A Canadian artist has canceled his show, "Since 1957," which was due to open on May 2 in New York, over President Trump's annexation threats. "The United States is no longer a country that Canadians can trust, and I feel it would be unpleasant and wrong to mount a show in the U.S. at this time," Toronto-based Alan Belcher wrote on Facebook. Now, @ArtNews is wondering, is a cultural boycott brewing? This follows Canadian author Louise Penny's cancelation of the U.S. leg of her book tour.
