Vice Raid (1959) is a crime potboiler which tries to be as lurid as possible given the constraints of the 50s. The reason to see it is Mamie van Doren playing a bad girl with the body of a goddess and the morals of an alley cat. She's fabulous.

Gidget (1959), the first surfer girl movie. Sandra Dee is amazingly charming. Lightweight amusing romantic fun that takes its heroine's struggles with growing up quite seriously. But the ending is - well let's just say I hated the ending.

The Thief of Bagdad (1924), entirely a product of the genius of Douglas Fairbanks Sr, is one of the greatest Hollywood movies ever made. A visually stupendous tale of adventure, magic and romance. Entrancing, breathtakingly imaginative. Superb.

The Hangman (1959) is a slightly odd but very good psychological western with Robert Taylor as a Deputy Marshal who has to bring in a wanted man but he has no idea what the fugitive looks like. Tina Louise could identify the man, but will she?

In un'intervista del '47, la Arzner, unica regista donna della Vecchia Hollywood, rivelò che negli anni '30, quando lavorava per la Paramount, avrebbe dovuto girare un film con la diva tedesca, 'Stepdaughters of War', sulle donne lavoratrici in tempo di guerra, ma che non vide mai la luce.

The Secret 6 (1931), an MGM pre-code gangster movie with added vigilante justice elements. MGM's gangster movies had a flavour of their own. Fast-paced and very violent, with star-making performances by Jean Harlow and Clark Gable. Good stuff.
