A project I'm working on is making a hardcover D&D Character Sheet Book. Since I need to learn and test new decoration techniques, I´m going through a series of experimental-bindings to familiarise with them. Hozier Lyric Book

Trimmed the edges, sacrificed some blood to the bookbinding gods, sewed endbands, and printed the end papers and cover. So far it’s my most successful book trimmed using only a chisel.
Original typeset by me. It includes the newest song “Hymn to Virgil”.

Ubik by PKD

I went all out on this one. It was a LOT of work: Hand painted end papers, original cover design, original typeset (made in MS Word), custom vintage advertisements, hand sewn endbands, and chisel-trimmed fore edge.

And when all was said and done, I found a glaring typo while flipping through the finished product. 😮‍💨

Oh well. It happens.

A book titled Ubik is shown against a blue-green background. The book is open in such a way that the entire hard cover is on display. The book is wrapped in canvas that is printed with a colorful design. The design background is a peach yellow. The front cover shows a flat painted image of a spray can labeled “Ubik” depicted in vibrant colors of green, pink, red, and blue, but the image is purposefully distorted, as if misprinted and smeared. The spine title and back cover illustration are similarly distorted. The back cover shows what looks like a vintage advertisement for Ubik, but the text is blurred to the point of unreadability. The only readable text is at the top, which is written in red cursive: GOOD AS NEW.

The book Ubik front cover has been opened to display the front end paper. The end paper is hand painted in bright and vibrant colors of yellow, green, blue, gold, copper, and red. The colors swirl like smoke, blending into each other.

The book is opened and turned to the table of contents page. The contents page is designed as a grid of squares, each labeled with the chapter number and the page range of those chapters. For example, chapter 8 ranges from page 122 to 141. Also within each square is a black circle with a white icon inside each. The icons show different objects, such as a toaster, a bra, a bank, a bowl of cereal, etc.

Looking at the top edge of the book, we can see a close up of the hand sewn endband that sits at the top of the book’s spine. The endband is sewn in shiny brown cotton thread.

A bookbinding weekend project! :)
This time a compact planner, recycling pages from an old #zelda calendar.

The #planner is a 2 sections 3 hole binding.

The #endpaper used was an experiment i did last summer trying to make #marbledpaper (although the experiment didn´t went very well)
