Key ideas are related to the concept of “simple” because they emphasize the importance of simplifying the message in order to make it more memorable, understandable, and actionable. This can be done through a core idea, a high-concept pitch, or a generative analogy, simplifying your message is a key ingredient in making it stick. By reducing complexity and providing a clear and concise message, one can help people make decisions, and ultimately act on the message. The core idea is the most important and fundamental concept of any message (Heath & Heath, 2007). It should therefore be simple, concise, and memorable, and should also convey the essence of the message in a way that is easily understood and memorable. Developing a core idea means distilling the message down to its most essential components and finding a way to express them clearly and compellingly. A core idea is notably the anchor point for all the other ideas and details in message. It should basically be restated throughout the message to ensure that it sticks. On the other hand decision paralysis occurs when people are faced with too many options or too much information which in turn makes it difficult for them to make a decision. To deal with decision paralysis, one needs to simplify the message and present the most essential information. This includes identifying the key decision-making criteria and presenting them in a clear and concise way.
A schema, a mental framework or model, helps people understand and interpret new information (Heath & Heath, 2007). By simplifying the message, one is essentially able to create a new schema that makes it easier for people to understand the message. Creating a schema requires identification of key concepts or ideas that are to be conveyed and finding a way to present them easily. For example, using analogies or metaphors that draw on familiar experiences or concepts that involve creating new mental models that help people make sense of complex ideas. The key to a successful high-concept pitch is to simplify the message down to the most essential elements and present it in a way that is clear and compelling. A high-concept pitch by definition is a brief, simple, and easy-to-understand description of an idea or story. It is one of the most used in the entertainment industry but it can be applied to other fields. The key thing lies in identifying the core idea or premise of your message and finding a way to express it in a way that is easily understood and memorable.
Proverbs are short, memorable sayings that convey a moral or practical lesson. They are mostly used to simplify complex ideas and make them more accessible. Proverbs are powerful communication tools and very good for complex ideas since they express them in a way that is easy to remember and understand. Generative analogies on the other hand are used to simplify complex ideas and make them more understandable (Heath & Heath, 2007). A generative analogy is a comparison between two things that are not obviously related but have underlying similarities that can help explain a concept.
