Can Interlune Mine Helium-3 on the Moon?

Interlune founded by Jeff Bezos and an Apollo astronaut, is developing the technology to harvest and bring materials back from the moon. Specifically the space company is focused on Helium-3, a stable isotope that is scarce on Earth but plentiful on the moon and could be used as fuel in nuclear fusion reactors as well as helping power the quantum computing industry.

A single liter costs a few thousand dollars. Because there is no magnetosphere around the #Moon 🌙, it's believed there are large quantities of #helium3 gas trapped in pockets of the #lunar regolith. #Interlune is working toward the launch of a demonstrator mission in 📆 2026 that will sample the lunar regolith, measure the helium-3 quantity, and then attempt to extract some of it. arstechnica.com/space/2024/03/

Mining Helium-3 on the #Moon will be difficult, especially if you have to go through dozens of tons of regolith to extract one gram of #Helium3 (that is the optimistic ratio by the way).

But if successful, it could result in nuclear fusion becoming a reality on Earth. Odds are not in our favor, but I am glad someone is making the attempt.
