The #Fraunhofer #IPMS in Dresden has developed a new type of sensor layer for chip-based #pH measurements. The metal oxide-based sensor layer is integrated in a 5x5 mm^2 compact #ion-sensitive #field-effect transistor (#ISFET). In combination with a conventional reference electrode, precise measurements between pH1 and pH13 with a drift of < 20µV/h can be performed. However, the integrated reference electrode still needs to be developed. 🙈

The illustration shows a top view of the compact 5x5mm2 ion-sensitive field-effect transistor, which is glued as a non-encapsulated chip to a white electronic board (probably made of Teflon). Bonding wires lead from the board to the top of the chip, where a green stripe can be seen in the center, representing the sensory active area. The novel sensor layer is not based on the critical material tantalum, but uses a different amphoteric metal oxide. Depending on the pH value, hydroxide or hydronium ions from the solution to be tested are reversibly deposited there. The voltage between the source and gate or the external silver/silver chloride reference electrode is used as the measurement signal. Making conventional reference electrodes redundant and developing a purely chip-based system is another of the institute's research goals (Copyright: Fraunhofer IPMS).

Die Abbildung zeigt eine Aufsicht auf den kompakten 5x5mm2 großen ionensensitiven Feldeffekttransistor, der als nicht-eingehauster Chip auf ein weißes Elekronikboard geklebt ist (wahrscheinlich aus Teflon). Vom Board führen Bonddrähte auf die Oberseite des Chips, wo in der Mitte ein grüner Streifen zu sehen ist, der den sensorisch aktiven Bereich darstellt. Die neuartige Sensorschicht basiert nicht auf dem kritischen Material Tantal, sondern nutzt ein anderes amphoteres Metalloxid. Entsprechend des pH-Wertes lagern sich dort Hydroxid- oder Hydroniumionen aus der zu testenden Lösung reversibel an. Die Spannung zwischen Source und Gate bzw. der externen Silber/Silberchlorid-Referenzelektrode wird als Messsignal verwendet. Konventionelle Bezugselektroden überflüssig zu machen und ein reines chipbasiertes System zu entwickeln, ist ein weiteres Forschungsziel des Instituts (Copyright: Fraunhofer IPMS).

New preprint on #IntegratedCommunityModels (#IPMs merging several data types, but with multiple species) to infer #interactions between species w/ Matthieu Paquet https://ecoevorxiv.org/repository/view/4836/ For the predator-prey framework that I developed in 2019 with @oaggimenez, we assessed how they dealt with false positives and stochasticity in the link functions that model interactions -- all seems good (bias, coverage,...), though these models generally require a little more data than initially thought.

Looks like there's a new version of {ipmr} on CRAN with some minor improvements and bug-fixes. {ipmr} is an excellent package for building integral projection models (#IPMs) in #rstats. https://padrinodb.github.io/ipmr/
